Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Walkers Comic Relief Limited Editions Confirmed sighting: Walkers Comic Relief Limited Editions
Posted: 21:15 Sun 16-Jan-2005. Price: 32p standard bag. Location: Morrisons, Bath. Sub-flavours: Cheese and Pickle, Bacon and Ketchup (both tested), Barbecue Chicken, Cheese and Bacon Quavers. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: With 1p per bag sold going to Comic Relief, this seems a very roundabout way of solving famine. Why not just send starving children some crisps, eh? But anyway, this is an interesting idea (mix and match Walkers' existing flavours) executed slightly disappointingly. The Cheese and Pickle is a bit of a cheat, the "pickle" element coming from the company's Pickled Onion but with the "D" crossed out, but it's a pleasantly tangy flavour, not too heavy on the cheese. Bacon and Ketchup fares less well, with a peppery taste which - curiously - is almost identical to the recent Asda own-brand implementation of bacon and *brown* sauce. News on the other two varieties as the situation unfolds.

..."Stuart" here confirms his previous cryptic comments on this topic, concluding a week of crisp news that also saw The Grocer magazine claim that the ever-controversial Nik Naks are launching a ginseng-laced "aphrodisiac" Naughty 'N' Saucy flavour (for 27p/ pack), while Saturday's Guardian carried a product recall for bags of Marks and Spencer "Loved By Kids" Cheesy Spirals (with a use-by date of 18th January), in relation to what they intriguingly describe as "isolated occurrences of a strong odour associated with the production process".

Comment: 1p PER packet?! Woah, talk about last of the big spenders.

Comment: they sell a LOT of packets of crisps. millions and millions per day. if you do the math, i think you'll find that it ends up being a fairly large amount when they hand the cheque over

Comment: There's something grim about contributing to famine relief by eating, though.

I'm surprised the papers jumped on Cadbury's giving away sports equipment with chocolate as hypocrisy, but haven't spotted this one.

Comment: There's a new Walkers Lites flavour, too - Honey Roast Ham. VERY DELICIOUS! Lites as a range are neither greasy nor particularly bad for weight watchers (1.5 points a bag). Which is handy, because I loves teh crisps.

Comment: Tried the Barbecue Chicken variety now. Surprisingly nice, given that I don't much like either of the component flavours. Also, people concerned about the level of charitable donations might want to note that if you buy the mixed six-pack, 6p out of the price (92p in Morrisons) goes to Comic Relief, which is proportionately about twice as much as if you buy single packs.

Comment: For me also the Barbecue Chicken is the best of the 3 new flavours. Cheese & Pickle came and went 2 years ago as a ltd edition flavour at the same time as Walkers introduced the Marmite flavour. Not being a pickle fan in real life, this crisp flavour is not a favourite of mine. The Bacon & Tom Sauce variety is quite nice but nothing special. To me it doesn't have anything like the same tang as Asda's Bacon and Brown Sauce flavour. As far as I know Sainsburys own brand crisps roll out of the Golden Wonder factory incidentally.

As for the Cheese & Bacon Quavers they are a big let-down. Somehow adding a Bacon flavour to the traditional Cheesyness of a Quaver makes it end up tasting of nothing. Well maybe a subtle hint of cardboard.

Comment: having just got a digital cam i was excited when i found the barbecue chicken flavour in my local last night. so i rushed home then, to my horror, noticed these had already been spotted. really enjoyed the taste though, kind of sweet, but perfect after a nights drinking.

Comment: I wish they'd keep cheese and pickle around as a permanent flavour. Used to be able to get lovely Smiths cheese & pickle crisps a few years ago before walkers took over everything. Sad.

Comment: Looks like the barbecue chicken is coming back, after a fashion. In the local cash'n'carry today I saw boxes of Walkers chicken-and-Heinz-barbecue sauce flavour, and also sausage-and-Heinz-tomato-ketchup flavour, in matching chef-ey box livery (white with checkered bands at top and bottom). They were both normal crisps, not Sensations or anything, in normal 34.5g bags.

Comment: Those new Sensations with Olive Oil- I had Sea Salt, and they were just a glorified version of Ready Salted. 86738 1
