Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Nestle Kit Kat Caramac Confirmed sighting: Nestle Kit Kat Caramac
Posted: 11:11 Wed 26-Jan-2005. Price: 99p for 8 bars of 2 finger KK's. Location: Morrisons, Leeds; Waitrose, Woodley, Reading. Nutritional unusualness: Two crisp wafer fingers with a caramel flavour coating (66%).
"Phillerena" reports: I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this - I've always thought they should do a Caramac KitKat. It's a Limited Edition so it seems like Nestle are treading carefully with this one. It tastes very nice - the Caramac smells much more strongly of caramel than the bar version and indeed it tastes much more strongly of caramel. My first bar had some wafer missing so of course I had about half a finger of pure Caramac. It works well with the wafer and tastes slightly similar to the white chocolate variety. It informs us on the back that the original Caramac bar is "Still available...enjoy it today", just in case anyone had forgotten about it.

...The Nestle insanity continues, with "Diarmuid Mallon" taking an respectable second place on this, adding: I'm fairly sure this is the first KitKat variant to be based on another sweet, in this case the Caramac bar, with the wrapper featuring both KK and Caramac logos. The chocolate seems to be "real" Caramac, and tastes pretty much as I remember it. And the small portion helps stop sugar over-load from a full bar of Caramac. Oh... and the foil is yellow to add to the Caramac feel. Oh 2.... and no KitKash info, so these are oddly left out of that promotion.

Comment: Is it April Fool's Day already? I can scarcely believe it - I've been putting Nestle under pressure for years about this, with my own one-man pressure group (see http://holyhoses.blogspot.com/2003/10/market-research-my-arse.html for example).

I need this product. Now. This is the most exciting news since someone thought of mixing bacon with lettuce and tomato.

Comment: I seem to remember waving one of the "gold" foil Caramack wrappers in a bunsen burner once (don't ask, don't remember) and being surprised when the "gold" actually flashed off and left a standard silver foil behind...

Anyone want to give this one a go? ;)

Comment: Nestle once sent an email to me identical to the one they sent you Rob - my idea was for a Pink Kitkat and they said they'd considered the idea before bla bla blah.

I've had 2 packs of the KK Caramacs now and almost all of them contained deformed wafer. One was on its side and in others there was only half a wafer inside...plus lots of chunks of pure Caramac.

Comment: I first wrote to Nestle (a proper letter, not email) some time in the early/mid 90s, after my epiphany in the Uni of Nott'm canteen. They wrote back then saying it was not under consideration. Then I emailed them again in '03.

Would a pink kk be strawberry? I can almost taste it. Or cherry vanilla, for real unusualness.

Okay, I'm desperate now. If anyone knows of any outlet in the buckingham/milton keynes area that's stocking the kkc, pppplease let me know. I even stopped at Tesco in Towcester last night, swept all their chocolate into the aisle and screamed out that they were charlatans who didn't deserve the "super" in "supermarket."

Comment: Morrisons do 3 for 2 also. I've been stocking up.

Also I found some snippets about Kitkat here:

"This innovative line of creating consumer attraction is set to continue, according to Graham Walker, Nestlé Rowntree's sales communications manager. He says: ôThe strategy of inspiring consumers through new variants is accelerating the growth of our flagship brand. Over the last 12 weeks (to 25 September 2004) the [KitKat] brand is up by 19%, with the singles running at 19% growth and the CBBs (chocolate biscuit bars) at 21 per cent growth." A new two-fingered white chocolate version has achieved value sales of over ú1m ($1.8m) since July this year, and a distinct move into upmarket variants, with Golden Caramel and Seville Orange single finger versions recently launched, has also proved successful. "

Comment: In our office we have a 4pm tea club. Today I offered round the Kit Kat caramacs (kindly purchased for me by my good friend Diarmuid M). There was a mixed reaction - a minority expressed the opinion that the combination is too rich but in general they were well received. One tea club member described the KK Caramac as a "fine dessert biscuit." An opinion with which I definitely concur.

Comment: The smell of these bars hits you first. It is pure delicious Caramac. But the taste is a bit of a let down. Not as Caramac-y as you'd hope for, and the Kit Kat wafer is somehow more brittle than in a regular Kit Kat. So these bars are trying to be two things at once, but end up falling somewhere between the two.
