Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Ginsters Deli Bake - Pepper Steak with Cheese Confirmed sighting: Ginsters Deli Bake - Pepper Steak with Cheese
Posted: 21:14 Tue 15-Feb-2005. Price: 1.19 (reduced to clear as it was out of date the next day - normally 1.89 I believe). Location: Safeway, Partick, Glasgow. Sub-flavours: Mozarella Cheese Salsa - possibly others, that was only other on the shelf. Nutritional unusualness: "Less than 350 Calories".
"Stephen Craig" reports: Clearly a successful launch, judging by the mammoth piles of them cluttering up the "Still Fresh!" shelf of my local Safeway, this new overpriced Cornish savoury product seems to be a healthier variant on the original "Peppered Steak Slice", beloved of filling stations up and down the land. Filling-wise, it appears to be more or less business as usual. The "with cheese" part is barely discernable, serving only to slightly temper the peppery aftertaste - while the mechanically-recovered-esque meat remains as close to the boundary of the legal definition of "steak" as possible. However, it's all change on the outside, as the thick, stodgy pastry has been replaced with a much thinner layer of far nicer stuff ("Made with Olive Oil" boasts the packaging), which is both much moister than the original and much less prone to coating the inside of your mouth in a suet-style residue. As a better tasting and lower calorie version of an occasional misguided late-night purchase then, the Deli Bake is a winner. (Oh and apologies for the mess of the photo. The big white bit in the middle is the remnants of the "Reduced to Clear" sticker, which steadfastly refused to be removed.)

..."Stephen Craig" returns with this connoisseur's account of a product we've been expecting for months now - speaking of which, regular Snackspot updates will be taking a bit of a break for the next week and a bit, but you can continue sending sightings in (if you like) for a bumper round-up at around the end of Feb. Stay hungry!

Comment: There were also piles of the Chicken and mushroom Deli Bakes at Sainsburys 9 Elms - All reduced because they were going out of date, none there the day before, then suddenly huge pile of them. I'd suggest some cock up in getting them to supermarkets rather than them not selling 1268 5
