Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Walkers Nobby's Chip Shop Salt 'n' Vinegar Crisps Confirmed sighting: Walkers Nobby's Chip Shop Salt 'n' Vinegar Crisps
Posted: 13:21 Fri 11-Mar-2005. Price: 9 inc VAT/ 32 x 50g bags. Location: Booker cash'n'carry, Bath. Sub-flavours: Friday Night Balti Chicken, Straight from the Grill Steak.
"Stuart Campbell" reports: Was in buying a box of onion-and-balsamic Sensations anyway, so grabbed a case of these at the same time, since I'm short of ordinary s'n'v at the moment. It's a big crisp, a little thinner than McCoy's with a looser ridge configuration, and a good strong malty vinegar flavour, maybe a fraction spicier than the normal Walkers one but not remarkably different. However, they're jacket crisps (a fact mentioned nowhere on the packaging), a move which might not go down well with the target market, because who wants lots of crappy little papery bits of potato skin floating around in their mouth while it's dehydrated and sticky from knocking back ten pints of cheap Eurolager from Wetherspoons, eh?

...Despite his rumoured upcoming TV appearance in "Ever Wondered About... Potatoes?", "Stuart Campbell" shows he hasn't his incisive edge with this analysis of Walkers' latest. And in other savoury salutations, "Jon" found himself paying 49p (presumably per can) for what he describes as "Tikka Masala, Sweet Chilli, and Mexican" flavours of Heinz Mean Beanz in Somerfield, Aberystwyth, commenting: Tikka and Mexican are well nice. Haven't tried the sweet chilli. It has sweetener in it and sweeteners are BAD!

Comment: The description of the cut of the crisp sounds very similar to Walker's suprisingly ace Potato Heads, although they're not jacket. Can you compare and confirm?

Jacket = A Good Thing.

Beanz? Artifically Sweetened Jesus.

Comment: "Stuart shows he hasn't his incisive edge"? Hey!

Incidentally, the pack comes with "Pub trick" tips on the back - the pack scanned has one listed as "No.2", which explains in diagram form how to always pot a ball from the break at pool. Curiously, all 31 other bags in the box I bought have the exact same tip.

Comment: Do you buy in bulk then? Perhaps different boxes have different tricks. Oh god Tony Blair is on the T.V.

Comment: The Balti Chicken flavour is very nice. Very similar to the Balti Real McCoys flavour - not too weak, not too strong. And the back of the pack told me all about why pirates wear eyepatches. I also had the Steak flavour [they are 45p per bag in my local newsagents] and after a poor start these seemed to get stronger in flavour the further down the packet I got. Unsurprisingly they reminded me of Steak Real McCoys in taste and texture. These crisps are nothing like the Potato Heads with their reduced fat - they are full-on crinkle cut flavour. The fact on the back of the Steak pack was all about Hat Tricks by the way.

Comment: I tried the steak variety of Nobby's and found them to be really spicy and meaty, just what you need after a few pints. Nice!!

Comment: These hit my local Boots today, and I gave them a try. Interesting to note the word "Walkers" is to be found nowhere on the packaging; perhaps Walkers are aware some people would rather by a non-Walkers brand to prevent their foil-wrapped hegemony of the UK crisp market?

Shallow peaks, with wide troughs, not at all like a Potato Head. Jacketyness wasn't very noticable. All in all, very good, but I might continue with Seabrooks/McCoys as my pub crisp of choice on ethical grounds.

Comment: Just tried the S&V ones to sate some late night hunger and they were excellent. *VERY* strong vinegar flavour. Although I can't find any Walkers Max anymore... are these two things related?

Comment: Saw the nuts last Thursday, in Varsity in York. Awful pub. Salty flavour, bacon flavour and sweet chilli flavour. I'm no fan of flavouring dusted nuts, so I avoided.

A colleague who's been travelleing said that Nobby's are the #1 pub crisp/nut brand in Australia, and that they were bought out by Lays/Pepsico. So, it looks like this is an extension of the Lays Global Iron Fist.

Comment: Also seem to be on offer at Safeway in Shepherd's Bush yesterday, but the multipack didn't seem to be available in S&V only. :(

Comment: An important dietary point has been missed here - I was scouring the packet looking for Walkers markings when I noticed a remarkable fact. Fat content is way down on your normal Walkers at a skinny 25%, compared to 33% or so for your normal Walkers. Also, packet weight is 35g, compared to the normal 25g for Walkers multipack - so I guess you keep the same fat content whilst eating more. A clear winner!! I give the S&V double thumbs up - sharp and to the point, Steak not quite as nice as McCoys but not bad at all. I haven't tried the Balti yet.

It's just a shame that they are produced by the Jackbooted thugs of Walkers Megacorp.

Comment: The Nobby's S&V taste the same as walkers max and have the same drawback for me. They taste great but if I eat too many bags in a day they strip skin off inside my mouth. The flavouring is like paint stripper for skin.

Comment: Does anyone know why they are called Nobby's? Who is Nobby?
Posted: 14:17 Fri 06-May-2005 by "cliff" # permalink comment
Comment: I suspect Nobby is a Marketing department's idea of fun branding.

I also suspect the reason they don't use the Walkers name is 'cos Walkers are doing a promo drive on 'reduced saturates' (nice kind healthy Walkers - they love you), and Nobby obviously uses fully saturated petrochemicals to fry in

I really and quite honestly cannot ignore these.. I hate to admit it... (and, no I don't work for them) but I frickin love these... I wouldn't normally eat nuts of any kind,.. but these really are bloomin x.

on a few occasions, I've had nothing else for lunch.. bad, but hey..

It's the best bit of frazzles with some serious peanut butter (depending on how fast you chew)-- I'm going to have me a couple PB&Bacon sarnies to test the theory...

Comment: Nobbys crisps, 'salt'n vinegar' are now selling in our local market for £2.50 for a box of 36-50gm packs (in date). Lovely texture, but far too heavy on the seasoning. Burns the tongue. Don't you employ anyone with active taste-buds?

Comment: nobbys cuts are made of bilton. My friend used to live in zimbabwe, and he hunted and caught his on food, and sumtimes he made bilton. He hunted it, killed it, skined it, hung it up 4 3 days to drain the blood, and then marrinated it with salt/pepper/vinigar, and he used the fur for clothes, and used the bones a number of things.

Comment: Nobby's nuts are the best, I can eat myself thru a box load of the bacon ones easy, so much so i have to limit myself. The chilli ones are just as nice and the dry roasted mmmmm good with a beer or 6.... jus not so keen on the salted!

Haven't really tried the crisps but will get round to that soon...
