Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Gu Posh Fresh Mint Chocs Confirmed sighting: Gu Posh Fresh Mint Chocs
Posted: 22:15 Tue 05-Apr-2005. Price: 4.99/ 120g box of 24. Location: Waitrose, Finchley Road, London. Nutritional unusualness: "Made with 70% cocoa chocolate, double cream and infused with fresh mint leaves".
Snackspot reports: Yeah, I know - 4.99 for a box of 24 fancy refrigerated After Eights (apparently they have "a shelf life of 35 days" in the chiller cabinet, according to The Grocer magazine). That's about 20p each, and while I had previously enjoyed one of Gu's (Double Chocolate) Mini Puds, that was mainly because they appeared to be packaged in something like an old-fashioned 35mm film container - for anyone more accustomed to After Eights, the most noticeable thing about the Posh Fresh Mint Chocs is that they actually do taste of real mint. And not necessarily in a good way.

...Nonetheless, The Grocer goes on to reveal that self-styled "chocolate extremists" Gu have also produced a Chocolate Orange and Almond Torte (also 4.99), a twin-pack of Fluffy Double Chocolate Mousses (2.49), plus a Maple and Pecan Chocolate Pud (also 2.49 for two - are they the ones that come in the glass "ramekin" things?), and also aim to launch products in the "soft drinks, frozen and canapes" categories by the end of 2005. Those seeking (slightly) cheaper menthol thrills may prefer the imminent Cadbury Snaps Mint (due May, 1.75), or tubs of new Burton's Viscount Minis (in mint, orange or praline, also due May, 1.49).

Comment: Tried the chocolate mousses and the orange and almond torte, and they are both bloody lovely. I am going to start building an extensive collection of utterly useless glass ramekins.

Speaking of expensive/chocolate/orange/almond products, Lindt do a dark choccy orange with almonds bar (tescos have them) which is pretty much the best choccy on the planet right now IMO. Something has finally beaten g&b maya gold into second place.
