Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Tyrrells Apple Chips Confirmed sighting: Tyrrells Apple Chips
Posted: 20:55 Mon 18-Apr-2005. Price: 89p/ 40g bag. Location: Waitrose, Finchley Road, London. Sub-flavours: Apple Chips; Apple Chips with Cinammon (pictured). Nutritional unusualness: "20% less fat than potato chips" (ie 21g per 100g, as compared to about 25g in Walkers Nobby's) - then again, they're also 39.3g sugar per 100g (vs about 1g in potato crisps).
Snackspot reports: Just to emphasise, these are crisps that are basically made out of apples - not apple-flavoured potato crisps, as some of the friends which I offered them to in a pub immediately assumed. Once you've got your head round that, they're a bit like eating a crunchy apple pie (the slightly tastier cinnamon flavour in particular). At this price (and sugar content), they seem likely to remain a novelty dessert rather than a serious competitor to potato varieties - with the slight bonus that the manufacturer being called "Tyrells" gives you some excuse to re-use all your favourite "Blade Runner" lines ("Do you like our crisps, Mr Deckard?" "Are they... non-potato?" "Of course they are" "Must be expensive" "Very").

...In other lower-fat fry-ups: Walkers appear to be trumpeting that their standard brands "now contain 30% less saturated fat than in 2003" (due to using more sunflower oil); while the makers of Stretch Island Fruit Leather are believed to have perfected a "vacuum-frying technology" which reduces fat by 50% for the UK launch of Terra Chips (in sea salt, sundried tomato, sour cream and chives, or mozzarella and red onion, from 49p/ 30g bag).

Comment: Well I've had Tyrrell's Beetroot Chips and their Parsnip Chips before, as well as the Assorted Root Vegetable Chips. And Tyrrells also do a lovely Creamed Asparagus flavour in their standard potato crisp range. I think it was a ltd edition flavour though, so look out for those.

Comment: Unfortunate name for your product there, Robert- are the "crings" cringe-worthy?

Comment: Of the two varieties, the natural apple flavour is the best in my opinion. Lovely and sweet, just like a real apple. The cinnamon variety seems to have the red cinnamon coating stuck to the edges with a thin layer of sugar.

Comment: Dear Gentlemen:

Would you be able to recommend a few sellers of vacuum apple fried chip technology.

Thank you in advance,

Comment: You could give Snapz Crisps a try - they do all sorts of flavours and shapes. You could try apple cubes or rings in plain, natural banana, orange, blackcurrant, or strawberry, or maybe you could give the carrot and orange flavour a bash - just like the soup! They also do a beetroot range. None of the crisps are baked or fried, suitable for vegans, dieters, children and have five-a-day approval. 75239 1

Comment: I have spotted the FULL range in a wonderful pub in a village called Dagnall, Herts. The pub is called the Golden Rule.
