Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Golden Wonder Golden Lights Grilled Chicken flavour Confirmed sighting: Golden Wonder Golden Lights Grilled Chicken flavour
Posted: 18:31 Wed 27-Apr-2005. Price: 1.48 for 15 bags multipack. Location: Asda Plymouth. Sub-flavours: Mediterranean Tomato and Basil. Nutritional unusualness: in a 21g bag there is "less than 4g of fat and only 93 calories".
"Magnetic Ham Sandwich" reports: The popular Golden Lights range from Golden Wonder has been expanded with a new "Summer Selection" multipack - featuring 2 new flavours alongside the standard Sea Salt flavour. The new varieties are Grilled Chicken (in yellow bags) and Mediterranean Tomato and Basil (in red bags). The chicken flavour does have a nice, strong chicken taste, and the tomato and basil has a pleasing tang of herbs and tomato. Both varieties are good additions to the range. The tomato and basil flavour is also available in the much bigger 150g bags - ideal for sharing with your healthy snacking chums.

...Crisp week continues with this lower-fat alternative, but "chrisc" seems somewhat disappointed with the rival 30% less saturated fat Walkers, complaining: Is it just me, or does anyone else think the "improved" Walker's Crisps are anything but? From the venerable "Ready Salted" to the upstart "Worcester Sauce", none are a patch on their former (but obviously less healthy) incarnations. The new sunflower-oil cooking method seems to have left the crisps anything but - they're drier and more crumbly than an old sock, and the flavourings seem well off their original, glorious selves. Whilst there's undeniable pleasure in the occasional crafty packet of the McCoys, Brannigans and Seabrooks of the world, the stalwart Walkers brand seems to have completely lost its way. Is there anything we can do?

Comment: I like the new Walkers. Sorry. The salt and vinegar (the only flavour I've tried, admittedly) don't seem any different to the old ones. Then again, this is from the snack machine at work, into which the supplier seems to shove anything going end of line or past it's best before date.

Comment: When will the world learn, Tayto crisps are the best?

Comment: Actually, I was telling lies; the new low fat Walkers are nowhere near as good as the old ones. My tastebuds must've been on holiday when I tried them before.

Comment: After being a big fan of their snack range (especially the classic spicy Bikers), and hearing so many people go on about them, I tried some Tayto crisps a while ago (salt'n'vinegar and cheese'n'onion flavours). They were absolutely bloody horrible. I had 30 bags and threw the whole lot out.

Comment: Throwing Taytos out? You could have sold them to expat Northern Irish like myself for some profit. However I quite agree that you cannot beat Bikers but their Bacon and Bean Postman Pat snacks were just as good.

Comment: The flavoured new Walkers are lovely (I especially enjoyed the smokey bacon). The Ready Salted, however, are horrible. A nasty, almost metallic, tang to them renders them almost inedible. Did they not taste-test the product before launch? 7937 6

Comment: You can buy Tayto's in Budgens stores.

Or the new low fat crinkle-cut girly tayto's are in asda.

Comment: We need some of these 'Wilkos' stores down south.

I hear their pick n'mix weighing lark is quite easy to fiddle.

Comment: There are only a couple of Budgens stores in the country north of Lincoln or west of Brighton, so they're unknown territory for the vast majority of people in the UK. There ARE loads of Wilkinsons stores all over the country though, and like the previous poster says, they now stock the low fat range of Tayto's crisps.

Comment: I'm off down Memory Lane now to do some shopping at Presto or Liptons or Fine Fare or Londis or Bejams or Gateway or Safeway or Lo Cost or Hillards or Fairway or VG or any one of those other great supermarkets of the past.
