Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Britvic Tango Clear Confirmed sighting: Britvic Tango Clear
Posted: 14:59 Tue 17-May-2005. Price: 95p/ 500ml (but 2 for 1). Location: Woolworths, Woking; Superdrug, Romsey; Scotmid, Winchburgh and South Queensferry; JCR, Bath. Sub-flavours: Apple and watermelon/ Lemon and kiwi. Nutritional unusualness: 3% apple, 3% watermelon, 2% pear, 5kcal per 100ml.
"Was a bit dubious about this, but am now converted. Remember the watermelon flavoured Spangles you used to get... well this tastes just like that. Would definitely buy this again" - "lex1977". "As for these impressing females, I have to disagree. Watermelon and kiwi - could a worse flavour have been chosen??! I seriously doubt it" - "Sandy". "Not tried it yet, but it's currently chilling in the fridge to try later on this week" - "Phill".

...Sightings (of one kind or another) have been flooding in for this for a few days now, but the ever-photogenic "Stuart Campbell" come up with the best pic, damning the product itself with the following faint praise: Normally this reporter, given a choice between a soft drink containing aspartame and the certainty of a protracted, hideous death from dehydration in an African desert, would be finding somewhere shady to lie down and die. And for drinks sweetened with ONLY aspartame rather than a mix of sweeteners and sugar, doubly so. So imagine my surprise when, purely in the spirit of investigative journalism, I sampled a bottle of each variety this weekend and found that, while a distance short of "delicious", both were actually more or less drinkable, with quite subtle flavour and little if any hint of the disgusting aftertaste that is aspartame's trademark. (Your correspondent was also caught out by the fact that Clear is carbonated - it does mention this in the ingredients list, but the label design screams "still".) The taste gets worse if you don't drink it all at once and let it get a little flat, but nevertheless, in a first for all-sweetener drinks, this is marginally preferable to death.

Comment: that's odd, i nearly choked on mine because it was fizzy - what have they done with the packaging that makes us expect flatitude*?

*okay, non-carbonation.

Comment: Is this the stuff that's being advertised with the penguin on a railway platform, and the geographically-inaccurate "arctic pet not included" tagline?

My details could be wrong; I was trying to read the ad as a bus sped past.

Comment: The advert was summat' around the lines of this woman being drenched by these workers and water spilling on her. But she says no need, she'll stay cool with 'Tango Clear'. Then the penguin slaps her on the leg with a wet fish. SLAPSTICK!!!
