Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Nestle Smarties Big Flavas Confirmed sighting: Nestle Smarties Big Flavas
Posted: 18:20 Mon 13-Jun-2005. Price: about 40p. Location: Woolies, Leeds. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Phillerena" reports: Yay - after everyone complaining that Fruity Smarties were not fruit-flavoured chocolate Smarties, Nestle have an answer. Smarties Big Flavas are like the giant Smarties they used to make, but with fruity flavoured shells. They're rather tasty. The orange ones are extra zingy, and the pink ones have a strawberry flavour! The green ones have a lime flavour, the blue ones are blueberry, the purple ones... err I think it's cherry, yellow ones are lemon, and I can't tell what the rest are. They also have a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory promotion on the side, where you can win a trip to a USA chocolate factory. Can't wait for the Wonka branded bars...

...Yes, 100 years ago, Albert Einstein had his "annus mirabilis", publishing three ground-breaking papers on the photoelectric effect, quantum mechanics, and special relativity. Now, "Phillerena" stands on the brink of a similar achievement in the snack-spotting world, what with these and last week's Nestle Kit Kat Strawberries and Cream. And perhaps with equally far-reaching ramifications - could these Big Flavas settle, once and for all, the age-old question of whether, with orange Smarties, it's just the coating that's orange-flavoured, or the chocolate inside too?

Comment: Thanks Snackspot :) Though I must add a crucial edit: the yellow Smarties are banana flavour and not lemon. It's hard to tell unless you can somehow manage to prize apart the shells.

Comment: Spotted White Smarties in Wilko's yesterday - but my attention was diverted by Werther's Original Butter Mints! Yum - 2 bags for £2.50. Sadly, they are only limited edition - I hate those words sometimes...

Comment: They are selling white smarties at Leeds market too, 5 tubes for £1. I have to avoid them, they're too addictive.

Comment: I spotted these in Jacksons, along with a spate of new products in the bag-of-jelly-sweets sector. These included Bassett's Fruity Babies, a brand-expanding knock off of Haribo Gummi Bears. A brief dekko through the packet suggested that they're distinctly bear-like for babies.

I'm on snack hiatus at the moment, as my girlfriend returned from Finland with an enormous box of Bassett's Wine Gums (over a kilogram). The Rev. Campbell is correct; these are infinitely superior to their Maynard's stablemates, being harder, more flavoursome, and without that odd "I've just inhaled aerosol wax furniture polish" feeling you get after eating the Maynard's ones. 27168 52
