Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Knorr Vie Shots Confirmed sighting: Knorr Vie Shots
Posted: 18:04 Mon 12-Sep-2005. Price: 1.68 for 3 little bottles at Tesco online. Location: C2000 in the Netherlands. Sub-flavours: Apple, carrot and strawberry; Orange, banana and carrot; Banana, pumpkin and kiwi. Nutritional unusualness: 12.6g sugar per 100ml bottle.
"Starshine" reports: Sounds revolting, I mean Apple, carrot and strawberry - can't say that it was a combination that sounded sane in any manner. The thing is, that they sound horrible, but in fact they are fantastic, the flavour is very good (reminds me of apricot juice, which I adore) and the texture is nice and thick. You don't get much for your money, but then they give me a lot of vitamins etc. that I don't normally get, so it isn't all bad.

...First-time spotter "Starshine" seems somewhat taken in by Unilever/ Knorr's claim that it's not their intention "to alienate people from natural foods" here, though the drinks themselves reminded me of that old people's Concentrated Fruit Smoothie that I bought that time as much as anything. In other frothy foolhardiness: the arrival over here of Starbucks' Toffee Nut Latte appears to be basically a "Caramel Macchiato" with pieces of granulated Dime bar on the top (though, according to this US report, get them while you can!); and, to tie in with the UK's annual Mad4Mango week, I've also sampled Campbell Soup's V8 Fruit And Vegetable Juice - Orange and Mango, which basically tastes like an "exotic" fruit cocktail, but with carrot in it, and is also available in Tropical, Citrus, or Apple And Melon varieties.

Comment: Had a nut latte last week, it was ok but the stuff on top was basically just brown sugar, all crunchy.

Mint mocha is nice though.

Comment: i'm a bit dubious about these vie shots (on bogof at waitrose btw). they have really long expiry dates (3 months), so i wonder how nutritious they actually are. the strawberry one is realllllly sweet but the banana and kiwi is quite nice. they also use a lot of plastic for packaging each small drink which seems a bit unnecessary.

Comment: I really like these, but they are expensive and I only buy them as a quick and convenient way towards my 'five a day' (of which I probably usually manage two!). The problem is, whilst the advertising uses the five a day theory to sell the product, neither the adverts nor the packaging actually state whether a shot is in fact EQUAL to one of those five. If not it's a pretty expensive way to get a three second taste of fruit!

Comment: As a PS to my previous post; I just emailed Unilever with my question and have received an automated response telling me I should receive a reply within three weeks! Nice to know I'm a valued cutomer :)

Comment: The advertising on the packaging is, in my humble opinion, somewhat misleading. It says "helping you on your way to at LEAST five a day" and shows each pot adding up to 5+ bits of fruit and or veg. This seems to suggest EACH pot will provide this. As I understand it, juice can only be one portion, however many juices you have. Tasty though!

Comment: Having just read the uni lever web page for vie shots, it appears that they count towards one of your 5 a day

Comment: ads for Vie say they "increase your fruit and vegetable intake by 50%" so for someone who is eating only 1 portion a day the Vie is worth a half portion while someone who already eats 5 portions will get an extra 2 and a half portions from the same "shot" how come? someone in unilever's ad department does not understand maths

Comment: Thanks for the comments, Knorr Vie R&D works hard to produce the excellent quality and innovation to our consumers. They truly support our Vitality mission for Unilever.

Comment: Each pot contains the equivalent of 200g fruits/vegs, which should account for half the amount of the five units recommended (400g) -- but due to the variety issue, Knorr/Unilever are apparently only allowed to advertise it as one unit, which they have assured ASA about after complaints about their advertising. ASA was shown documentation that the DoH had been consulted in this matter. (see http://www.asa.org.uk/ [URL display truncated])

I love these "shots" and they are a good (if rather expensive) way of getting some of your five a day.

Comment: All the large super markets in my area have stoped selling Vie shots, why?
