Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewell Muffin Confirmed sighting: Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewell Muffin
Posted: 18:02 Fri 23-Sep-2005. Price: 0.89. Location: Sainsbury's Victoria, London. Nutritional unusualness: May contain cherry stones.
"Flameproof" reports: Hello! Not sure if you've already seen this one, but I've just found a McVitie's Cherry Bakewell Muffin, which has all the good bits of a cherry bakewell (sticky "fruit flavour" jam, tasty almond sponge), with none of the bad (pastry). It also improves it by being about 3x the size! Truly this should be nominated for cake of the year?

...Our old friend "Flameproof" returns with what may well be a historic team-up between McVitie's and Mr Kipling - unless anyone out there knows any different? And in other cakeful wakefulness: The Grocer reports that the makers of Cadbury Mini Donuts are diversifying into a frozen, non-Cadbury-branded version with "Jaffa" and "Jammy" dipping options; while "jb" sadly forgot to provide photographic evidence of the Kinder Pingui he paid 32p for at "Green's Food Fayre", diagnosing: This claims to be fine chocolate covered sponge with milky filling. However there is very little sponge and a lot of filling. It tastes a bit like a giant chilled Cadbury's MiniRoll. I quite liked it. Judging by the language this product is also sold in Russia.

Comment: Those jaffa dipping doughnut things have been out a while now in Morrisons. Didnt buy any as they looked cheap and nasty.

Comment: This is sacriledge. The Great Bakewell Tart cannot be improved on, indeed it is the King of Tarts.

Comment: Although Bakewell Tarts are undeniably amazing, with little need for tampering, I think we can trust Mr Kipling to do them justice in Muffin form. He does make exceedingly good cakes.

Comment: Just as an additional to the above- I forgot to mention that there is nothing about McVitie's on the packet, but the shelf sticker at Sainsbury's informed me that this was a McVitie's Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewell Muffin. So how much faith you want to put into this information is up to you...

Comment: yeah, I think that might be a mistake on Sainsbury's part - as far as I know, Mr Kipling is part of the "Manor Bakeries" axis: http://www.irn-talkingshop.co.uk/categorymanager/manor/whoaremanor.html

(who also have a licensing deal to make Cadbury cake products), whereas McVitie's is part of arch-rivals "United Biscuits", who therefore make muffins branded by Jaffa Cakes or Masterfoods confectionery like Galaxy or M and Ms?
