Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Nestle Rowntrees Beetles And Butterflies Confirmed sighting: Nestle Rowntrees Beetles And Butterflies
Posted: 14:43 Fri 30-Sep-2005. Price: 20p. Location: Seaton in Devon. Nutritional unusualness: Just 0.1g of fat per bag.
"Magnetic Ham Sandwich" reports: Rowntrees have added yet more edible insects to their ever-growing range. Following on from Burstin' Bugs, Wiggly Worms, Fruity Frogs and Sour Spiders (now available as New Xtra Sour Spiders BTW), we have Beetles And Butterflies. They are just generic fruity flavoured sweets moulded in the shape of insects. Nothing exciting or groundbreakingly new for your 20p. The pack I had only contained 2 Butterflies but had 7 Beetles. There was a good mix of "flavours" though with 5 different colours of insect, but Apple juice (6%) seems to be the only fruity ingredient listed.

...Meanwhile, in other morphological mimicry: my local Sainsbury's appears to be covering all the bases by putting out the seasonal Christmas confectionery (advent calendars etc) at the same time as this year's Halloween specials, the latter of which includes bright orange foil-wrapped Smarties Pumpkins plus Rowntrees Slimy Spooks, which I didn't check too closely but must assume are using "spook" in the sense of "A ghost; a specter" rather than "a disparaging term for a Black person".
