Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Warburtons Pizza flavour Crumpets Confirmed sighting: Warburtons Pizza flavour Crumpets
Posted: 18:33 Mon 17-Oct-2005. Price: 69p. Location: Morrisons, Leeds. Nutritional unusualness: Calcium Propionate (added to inhibit mould growth!).
"Phillerena" reports: According to Warburtons these are "The first continental crumpet, a terrific twist on a British great!" They look different to regular crumpets, a sort of orangey colour with tiny green specks in them. They are quite tasty once grilled and with plenty of margarine melting into them. Nothing amazing but they make a change from the norm. I had a bit of cheese melted on top to add to the pizza theme.

..."Phillerena" here keeps tabs on the busy baked goods market - Warburtons have already launched Healthy Inside, a wholemeal loaf with added prebiotic (to compete with the likes of Waitrose's selenium-enriched bread?), and I'm not too clear on the difference between their pre-spread cheese (or ham) All In One Riddlers and the "Warbies" mentioned in passing by "jb" as follows: A little tour of my local Asda revealed a multitude of new products - Warburton's Warbies (those roll thingys) and Warburton's Pizza flavour crumpets but the thing that really caught my eye was this Osem Bamba Peanut Snack that has come all the way from Israel (28p, Asda Maryhill, Glasgow - Kosher Parve and you must "protect from the sun"). Having seen it reviewed on taquitos.net I just had to buy it. Very disturbing baby on the front though.

Comment: The warbies are the same as the riddlers I got the name wrong. Sorry, they looked awful anyway and they are on special offer.

Comment: I got a freebie Warbie at ASDA the other night...wasn't too impressed...I'd rather make my own cheese spread sandwich.

Comment: the riddlers are in asda magazine this month and look awful. they contain 'all the goodness of a home made sandwich of toastie bread and a leading cheese spread' (i'm paraphrasing here, but it's close). as if that's a good thing! they do look like they would survive a nuclear holocaust, however.

Comment: Those peanut snacks look similar to peanut flavour crisps you get in Germany - they are a puffed up maize snacks that look like peanuts and taste like them. Quite nice.

Comment: no apology necessary "jb" - it appears that "Warbie" is an affectionate nickname for a wide range of Warburtons products, particularly in the north of england?

Comment: these are well nice and i am going to treat all you snackspot readers by telling you how they are best eaten,

first, toast as usual

second, get a small jar of sacla aubergine pesto (£1.70ish) see http://www.sacla.co.uk

third, spread the aubergine pesto onto the hot crumpet generously

fourth, sprinkle some fresh, grated mozzerella cheese on top evenly

fifth, add some tabasco red or green sauce if desired>>>hot hot hot!

sixth, place under grill or in microwave very briefly just to melt the mozzarella slightly

seven, stop carrying out all these tiring steps and eat your delicious food creation

eight, remember the nice guy who posted this culinary marvel on snackspot and send him your best wishes
