Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Burton's Fruvo natural energy bars Confirmed sighting: Burton's Fruvo natural energy bars
Posted: 19:46 Thu 17-Nov-2005. Price: 1.99/ box of 3 - though currently on "Buy one, get one free". Location: Sainsbury's, North London. Sub-flavours: Mental Energy Boost (pictured); Immune Boost; Physical Boost; Probiotic. Nutritional unusualness: Hydrogenated vegetable oil in the "Yoghurt Topping" on the "Immune Boost" - unlikely to make you more "immune" to, for instance, heart disease.
Snackspot reports: I've only tried the "Mental Energy" (Apricots and Apples boosted with Ginseng and Ginkgo Biloba) and "Immune Boost" (Apricots, Almonds and Yoghurt topping boosted with Echinacea, Vitamin C and Zinc) varieites, but - at more than 34% dried fruit - these reminded me most of those weirdly compressed Sundora Real Fruit Bars, though in slightly more biscuit-like form. They make for a pleasantly chewy change but - thanks no doubt to my boosted mental alertness - I can't ignore that the normal price of 1.99 for a box of three (ie 66p each) surely makes them some of the most expensive bars around?

...Anyway, in more disc-shaped discoveries: the Camden Morrisons is selling Montana's slightly thinner competitors to the classic Maryland Cookies (in Chocolate Chip or Orange, 59p); while Sainsbury's also had these Nestle Smarties Doughnuts (2 for 59p) and, incidentally, appear to be toning down their Try Something New campaign (which mainly seems to involve adding lime juice to everything) - here's hoping they take a leaf out of Unnovations' book and start advertising ready meals with "Try forking dolefully into your downturned mouth between guttural sobs of wounded despair".

Comment: Have been munching "Fruvos" for some time - courtesy of Tesco;Montrose. Now a discontinued line:still priced (at!) £1.98 So much for the benefits attributed to Gingko Biloba (improves memory) - I forgot my 'Clubcard' on one occasion: went to collect it: did some shopping and forgot a bag of shopping! Help.

Mind you, I do enjoy the bars - all of them!
