Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Real Patatas Pravas Confirmed sighting: Real Patatas Pravas
Posted: 22:17 Tue 29-Nov-2005. Price: Around 1.20. Location: Starbucks, Peterborough. Sub-flavours: Salt and Malt Vinegar, Salted, amongst others. Nutritional unusualness: The usual for handcooked crisps - who cares about sat fats!.
"Flavour Monkey" reports: I see that Real Crisps have updated their packaging, I think they have a really great look now - traditional "greasy" style film. This is, I think, the only new addition to the range, but what an addition! The first crisp company in the UK to try out the famous Spanish dish of Patatas Bravas. A lovely balance of cream, tomato and garlic, with a deep chilli kick - I'll be getting these again.

...I'm not sure what relation these might be to the previously discussed Patatas Fritas Rubio, but the ever-vigilant "E.W." has found a possible competitor in the form of the Kettle Chips Crinkle Cut Sweet Chilli he paid 1.28 for in Asda, Sutton-In-Ashfield, confiding: For quite a few years now I have been a fan of sweet chilli sauce, in Thai and Chinese recipies, so when I first spotted this flavour of Kettle Chips in the standard form I didn't hesitate to buy them. Kettle Chips have made their crinkle cut version a bit different - although it's only a minor change, I applaud it 'cause it works well. The strong chilli flavor with its dash of brown sugar sweetness has now been complemented with extra sea salt in a typical crinkle cut fashion. Such a small change has defined that they are a crinkle cut not another seasoning re-used. For all those Thai and Oriental fans, these Sweet Chilli crisps have a great kick of authenticity.

Comment: I had a packet of these crisps last week at Exeter Airport, and found them to be really good. They have a strong smooth and smokey flavour - made from '100% natural ingredients'. As it says on the packaging, Real Crisps are throwing down the gauntlet to other crisp makers to come up with something as good themselves. I just wish the 50g bag had been bigger.

Comment: I tried the Real Patatas Pravas at one of the starbucks in meadowhall, sheffield not long ago. They are real tasty and i agree with flavour monkey that they have "A lovely balance of cream" to match with the chilli flavour. i'd never heard of the spanish dish before i brought them but would really like to try it as a dish as well!
