Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Lily O'Briens Toffee and Shortcake Truffle Egg Confirmed sighting: Lily O'Briens Toffee and Shortcake Truffle Egg
Posted: 10:15 Sat 07-Jan-2006. Price: 49p. Location: Sainsbury, Workingham Road, Reading. Nutritional unusualness: 3% Shortcake biscuits.
"Diarmuid Mallon" reports: Can I claim the prize for the 1st Easter egg sighting? Sainsbury have a whole end-of-aisle display for Easter eggs, and the xmas sweets are still on the shelves. So what was the egg like? Well don't be fooled by the description/ picture. What you get is a okay chocolate egg, filled with a very bland "truffle". In which, mine had 2 tiny shortcake "balls" and a little "toffee" stuck between the filling and the shell. Stick to the lollys - they are much, much better.

...Actually, "Diarmuid", I didn't think these were that bad - the chocolate was much more Belgian than, say, the Nestle Double Cream Egg, though I wasn't too sure about the toffee... Anyway, in other oval-shaped overtures: The Grocer magazine predicts that this year's Nestle Easter lineup will star Rowntrees Fried Eggs ("orange and lemon flavoured egg-shaped jelly sweets"), 15p "filled chocolate Easter bars" in Hop O Late, Chick Choc and Quack Snack variants, plus more expensive "specialty novelty eggs" including Kit Kat Keeper (with "special holder for a Kit Kat two-finger biscuit"), Yorkie Subbuteo ("with a mini Subbuteo football game"), and the largely self-explanatory Milkybar Buckaroo.

Comment: Such a disappointing litte egg. They make it look so nice on the packaging but do not be fooled, this is one nasty tasting waxy little sucker...Not recommended.

Comment: Delighted to find something different in the nut free catagory. My children were very excited and gobbled them down. A nice change from creme eggs.

Comment: don't forget that the product contains hydrogenated vegetable oil which is v toxic and even banned in the USA.

Comment: not quite, "Cherylee" - hydrogenated vegetable oil is (effectively?) banned in Denmark: http://www.organicconsumers.org/foodsafety/transfat022305.cfm

- but not, as far as I know, in the USA. It also falls short of most people's definition of "v toxic", though I'd be first to agree that it's not particularly good for you...

Comment: They have Hop O late and Chick Choc at the till in Asda. I didn't buy any though. It looks like a Freddo The Frog sort of thing, but a bit smaller, but as it's filled with "white fondant", presumably intended as a competitor to the Creme Egg.

Comment: yeah, I saw that Rolo Cake in Morrisons too - I assumed it was a rebranded version of this one (right down to the 6-inch diameter)? http://www.snackspot.org.uk/thread.php?story=0407152303sbc

Comment: Thats the one.

I tried the lily o'briens truffle egg today and found it very nice, much nicer than the Nestle easter eggs. Lovely sweet chocolatey truffle, although there wasnt enough toffee or biscuit for my liking. I would buy it again though.
