Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Walkers Crisps Spicy Chilli flavour Confirmed sighting: Walkers Crisps Spicy Chilli flavour
Posted: 13:11 Fri 27-Jan-2006. Price: 95p for 6 in a multipack. Location: Sainsbury's, Plymouth. Nutritional unusualness: Now 70% less saturated fat per bag than Walkers Crisps from 2003.
"Magnetic Ham Sandwich" reports: Never ones to let the grass grow under their feet, Walkers have launched what is by my count their fourth new product of the year already (following on from the new flavour of Potato Heads and the two flavours of Cheese Heads). This time it's the launch of a new permanent addition to their standard crisp range - bringing the number of flavours available back up to the 13 we had four years ago before Cream Cheese And Chive flavour was discontinued. These Spicy Chilli crisps also see the debut of the new style Walkers logo on the packs (very similar to the old one, but uses a different typeface), and is the first of their crisp flavours to appear on the shelves that is cooked in the new "Sunseed" oil which is much lower in saturated fat (70% lower in fact) than the vegetable oil Walkers used to fry their crisps in just two years ago. In fact the amount of calories and fat per bag has stayed the same over the last couple of years, but at least it's now a fat that is less bad for you apparently. The actual crisps taste just like the Thai Sweet Chilli crisps that are the most popular flavour from Walkers' Sensations range. There are little red flecks on some of them, and you get a fair old dose of heat in your mouth from each crisp. I predict these crisps will prove to be a popular addition to the Walkers range.

...Great stuff "MHS", but does the "Sunseed" oil taste any different? I had a multipack of Walkers' "30% less saturated fat" ones last week and have to agree with "chrisc" - they were so soggy I thought I'd picked up a bag of Golder Wonder by mistake!

Comment: The two other new flavours are Cheese, and Lamb and Mint.

The number of varieties is actually staying at 12 - they're getting rid of the three worst-selling flavours - Barbeque, Heinz Ketchup (apart from in Scotland, where is sells really well!), and Pickled Onion.

Comment: Pickled Onion!? Oh for God sake's they're one of the best. So are Barbeque for that matter. Do away with Tomato Ketchup, fine.

Cream cheese and chive were one of my favourite after school flavours as a child. Worscestershire sauce were amazing also.

Comment: Pickled Onion sells *terribly* - at least, at the Cash and Carry I work at, anyway.

I personally find them disgusting (too strong - I like Monster Munch, though) - but I'm not convinced that's the real reason they sell so badly. How many newsagents do you know that stock the entire range of 12 flavours? Not many - because, along with all the other snacks they sell, there just isn't enough room.

These new flavours may well sell better to start with, because consumers want to try new things. But in the end, there's a limit to what most people will stock.

Comment: Oh great. So Golden Wonder are dead and Walkers are cancelling - that means the end of pickled onion crisps altogether. It was bad enough when all these nancy-boy flavours started hogging all the shelf space and making "classic" crisps hard to find, but to kill them entirely is unforgivable. Walkers won't be getting any more of my money. Between crushing the competition, changing to this nasty-tasting new fat and binning the good flavours, they've achieved something I never thought I'd see in Britain - they've destroyed crisps.

Comment: They still sell Seabrooks in my local pound shop, these are my all time fave crisps. The beefy flavour being the best. 5 bags for a pound too. The only Walkers products I seem to buy now are actually Doritos which doesnt carry the Walkers logo, but is made by them.

Comment: Every Wilkinson's store in the country carries the same handful of crisp lines, amongst which is the Pickled Onion flavour of Walkers if anyone wants to stock up on a soon-to-be-disappearing flavour. Wilkinsons seem to be a staunch supporter of Pickled Onion, which is almost impossible to find elsewhere. Mind you, I've always preferred the softer tones of Spring Onion flavour to the eye-watering harshness of Pickled Onion. Maybe Walkers should sell their Spring Onion flavour to a wider market [as far as I know although produced in the same factory as all their other flavours it's only sold in places like Ireland and Saudi Arabia].

With the end of Pickled Onion Discos recently also, it seems as if the taste tide is turning away from that flavour. I remember it happening a few years ago [at the height of all the Mad Cow hoo-ha] when all the stores own-brand multipacks turned their back on Roast Beef flavour, replacing it with the inferior Barbecue. Even Walkers added Barbecue to their standard range, but now I see that is being discontinued also. In terms of Walkers flavour sales in the UK, the 'Big 3' take roughly two thirds of the market, followed in popularity by the 'Meaty 3', with the other 6 flavours only selling comparitively small amounts. Cream Cheese & Chive was a big hit initially when launched, but sales soon dropped off dramatically. Only Marmite out of the large number of limited edition flavours launched in the past 5 years has proved popular enough to remain in production. I remember the big fuss when Walkers launched Curry flavour in the late 80s, but that flavour also very soon faded away. At least picked onion fans have still got the Roasted Onion & Balsamic Vinegar variety of Sensations to enjoy though.

And lastly it seems I've miscounted the number of new Walkers products by at least one - as there are infact two new flavours of Potato Heads on the shelves for 2006 - Naked [Unsalted] and also there's Sweet BBQ in black edged bags.

Comment: I had the new Lamb & Mint flavour for the first time yesterday. Makes me wonder what future there is for the identical Lamb & Mint flavour crisps already available in the Walkers Sensations range.

These new reduced saturated fat crisps still leave a lot of grease smeared on the inside of the foil bag just like Walkers products of old.

Comment: You know, I was desperately trying to remember the info I typed above - I was debating whether it was Barbeque or Worcester Sauce that was going. Sorry.

Oddly, in my cash and carry IN ENGLAND yesterday, we got a case of the new Pickled Onion flavour. Presumably Walkers just sent it us since we ordered it, as my cash and carry haven't delisted the correct lines yet.

Don't see the point of the spicy chilli ones. Weak flavour and nowhere near spicy enough. They'll never dislodge Chilli McCoys...

Comment: I hate the fact the Walkers have a near monopoly throughout this septic isle! I've never been a bg fan of their sub-standard fare, and always prefered Smiths and Golden Wonder in the 80s/90s. Snacks today are derisory- made with inferior ingredients/produce. The big conglomerates have destroyed the English snack food market. Welcome to the New World Order!

Anyway, Walkers crisps are putrid- they look undercooked, and are almost see-through!! If you like Walkers crisps, you must be in your teens- and therefore have no idea about how crisps used to taste. I wouldn't be surprised if the potatoes were GM infested these days also.

Comment: Turns out the Cheddar Cheese variety tastes EXACTLY the same as Cheesy Quavers do. I can't see the point of Walkers having the same flavour in two of their most popular snack brands, so I don't think the Cheese crisps will be around for too long. I was hoping for a taste similar to the Fromage flavour crisps available in France under the Lays branding. They are a really nice cheesy crisp, like the Golden Wonder produced XL Cheese crisps available in the North of this country.

By the way - as well as Cheese, the other Lays/Walkers flavours available in France for their more cultured paletes are Ready Salted, Roast Chicken & Thyme, Bolognase, Heinz Tomato Ketchup, Small Onions, Mustard & Pickle, and Barbecue. There are also just two flavours of Lays Sensations - Four Cheese & Red Onion and Sea Salt & Black Pepper.

Comment: The good news for Pickled Onion fans is that they seen to be still available from branches of Wilkinson's. The newly-branded, newly-reduced saturated fat bags [along with the other Walker's flavours stocked] are on sale there at 28p each, or any 4 for £1.

Also Walkers multipack fans may be interested to know the number of packs contained has been upped from 24 to 26 for both the Standard and Meaty multipacks. The price for either seems to be set at £2.99, but there is a £1 off offer at Morrisons right now. The line-up of flavours enclosed is now as follows...

Standard multipack.. 5 Ready Salted, 5 Cheese & Onion, 4 Salt & Vinegar, 4 Barbecue, 4 Prawn Cocktail, 4 Cheddar Cheese.

Meaty multipack...... 5 Ready Salted, 5 Cheese & Onion, 4 Salt & Vinegar, 4 Smokey Bacon, 4 Roast Chicken, 4 Lamb & Mint.

Comment: There's a 2 page feature in the April issue of Creative Review magazine about the re-branding of Walkers crisps. Basically they say it wasn't radical enough, the new typeface looks cheap and tacky, no-ones bothered about the new Sunseed Oil anyway, and they should have taken the opportunity to switch Salt & Vinegar and Cheese & Onion to their 'rightful' colours at long last.

Comment: Tried the 'New Spicy Chilli' walkers today.

Verdict: Characteristically disappointing.

Reasons:

1.Lack of chilli element (why call them spicy chilli when they’re neither spicy or chilli?).

2.They’re sickly.

3.Poor packaging means that there’s potential to confuse them with prawn and cocktail meaning possible lunch time letdown.

4.There’s no dust / powder at the end of the bag. i.e the people at the factory either can’t be bothered to put flavour in or they a scrimping on flavour powder to save up for another pointless ‘new flavour’ or re-branding exercise.

5.You don’t get very many (this particular pack was noticeably under weight).

6.They make your fingers smell like you’ve been fingering an onion bargie.

7.They’re trying to be a poor man’s Sensations, the majority of which aren’t very good to start with as they’re vastly overpriced and people only buy them on Saturdays so that they can think they are a bit special. I’m sick of pretending I like them when people buy them in as a treat.

8.The salt content is above average yet you can’t even taste it, so why put any in at all?

9.Reasons 2, 3 and 5 combined put you in a bad mood.

Comment: Well it seems that Clerk's premonition back in January has come true after all. Without any warning Walkers have discontinued their Barbecue flavour crisps after all. In their place in the latest multipacks they have produced the very similar sounding BBQ Rib flavour. Even the packs remain the same black colour. The new BBQ Rib flavour has a much sharper taste than the old Barbecue did though. It seems like Walkers have achieved this stunning 'new' flavour by simply replacing the Paprika in the old Barbecue flavour [which gave the crisps a very orange appearance] with Soya Sauce to make the new BBQ Rib flavour. So if you like Ribs, now there's no excuse to get snacking.
Posted: 18:39 Tue 11-Jul-2006 by "Magnetic Ham Sandwich" # permalink comment
Comment: Not content with replacing Barbecue flavour with BBQ Rib, Walkers have just dropped their Beef & Onion flavour from the range. Always difficult to track down [due in part to it not appearing in any of the common multipacks] it has finally bitten the dust. But don't worry too much because in it's place we have got 'new' Steak & Onion flavour instead. The crisps have little flecks of black and green stuff on them, and taste similar to the old Steak & Peppercorn Sauce Sensations Walkers used to produce - definately more 'steak-y' than the old Beef flavour they have replaced. I preferred the old flavour myself, but even that was not a patch on the old mega delicious KP Crisps Beefy flavour of the 70s.

There he may spot that the answer to his query was mentioned 8 months ago. If he wants Paprika flavour crisps, my tip would be to go to Lidl. They do giant bags for just 89p. It's a flavour that is common across Europe but strangely rare here - especially since Walkers discontinued their Barbecue flavour last year.
