Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: McCoy's Specials Ridged Tortillas Confirmed sighting: McCoy's Specials Ridged Tortillas
Posted: 11:32 Mon 13-Mar-2006. Price: 60p. Location: The 5 Bells, Chelsfield, Kent. Sub-flavours: Hickory Smoked Ribs; Nacho Cheese and Sour Cream; Red Chilli and Lime (untested - not forgetting Sizzling Steak and Onion Fajita as well?). Nutritional unusualness: 9.7g fat per bag (ribs), 10.1g fat (cheese) - both contain milk, and are "produced on a line handling soya, gluten".
"EzChile" reports: I had the pleasure of finding both the Hickory Ribs and Nacho Cheese variants of these in my local pub. The Hickory Smoked ones were my favourite, with a surprisingly convincing smokey flavour, and a superb almost sweet and sour tang to the sauce. The Nacho Cheese and Sour Cream combo also didn't fail to please, with its rich buttery flavour. Both flavours still left enough tortilla flavour to remind you that was what you were eating. Both packs didn't really display many ridges per tortilla, though, but they did seem to be folded over instead of flat, allowing for them to come out in pleasing chunks of tortilla. Will definitely be buying again, possibly to mix the two flavours.

...First-time spotter "EzChile" here confirms previous murmurings - I wasn't too impressed with the Red Chilli and Lime variety, but agree that the Hickory Ribs' almost-Burger-King "flame grilled" hints make them a potential Doritos-killer. KP are also increasing the available flavour-area of Hula Hoops Ridges (in Sour Cream and Chive, BBQ Chicken, Totally Cheesey, or Steak and Onion), though those seeking something more substantial now have the alternative of SK Chilled Foods' I Love Nachos Movie Meal Kit, letting you "enjoy movie-style nachos, complete with melted cheese and jalapenos, in just 20 seconds from the microwave".

Comment: Neither of the packets I tried made any mention of the steak and onion variety, surprisingly. Ribs quoted nacho and red chilli as other flavours to try, and nacho quoted ribs and red chilli.

Comment: There is a Steak and Onion Fajita variety - spotted in BP garage Corby along with the others in the range.

Comment: So far only tried the ribs flavour - I'm a little unsure about the ridges, but I do prefer them to doritos! Question is, will they come in some sort of novelty packaging; let's face it, I doubt people buy pringles for the taste...

Comment: I was quite literally pipped to the post on this sighting, as only yesterday morning I had purchased all four sub-flavours - two in LARGE packs :o)

Anyhoo, I found the smoke flavour of the Hickory Ribs variety eerily disturbing - smelling like the aftermath of a house fire / damped-down bonfire. Ick. I will report back on other flavours soonest.

Comment: Pipped to the post by two days? :) I submitted the sighting on Sunday. Still, you've beaten me by a flavour anyway (I now have the chilli and lime ones waiting to be munched.. but I have a sore throat at the moment, so they'll have to wait)

I look forward to hearing what you thought of the others as well!

Comment: OK - so the Steak & Onion Fajita variant has now been munched. Undoubtedly a hint of burnt onion in there, but the "steak" element is - to my palate at least - conspicuous by its absence. On the whole, a not unpleasant experience, but any loading of salsa / dip would probably wipe out what flavour there is.

Green-based packaging may lure some unwary vegetarians into purchase, which woud be amusing :o)

Hats off to McCoys in any case, for having the chutzpah to launch four all-new tortilla chips in one go. Bravo, or indeed, Ay Caramba!

Comment: I tried the steak and onion ones last weekend and was left feeling none plussed. As usual there was next to no flavour other than the tortilla itself and the flavour certainly didnt stand up to any dipping.

whatever happened to phileas fog extra hot chilli tortillas?

Comment: I tried the smoked ones the other day but the distribution of flavour from chip to chip was disappointing, some were really bland, managed half the pack and gave the leftovers to the missus. My conclusion? still prefer Doritos Extreme Chilli heatwave, consistantly yummy!. That maybe down to MSG content though im not entirely sure. sigh i'm a msg whore.... curse you tastebuds!

Comment: If anyone remembers the excellent Walker's Maple Cured Ham 3Ds snack from about 10 years ago, then try the "Hickory Smoked Rib" flavour tortilla's, the flavour is almost identical. :) 74260 9

Comment: The whole range of McCoy's Tortillas are disgusting. Doritos are far superior. These just taste like unseasoned cardboard. Shame cause I love their regular and Specials crisps lines. This tortillas line is just disappointing.
