Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: KP Hula Hoop Ridges Confirmed sighting: KP Hula Hoop Ridges
Posted: 07:52 Wed 22-Mar-2006. Price: 99p-1.05 for 6 pack. Location: Tesco, Kidderminster; Morrisons, Warrington. Sub-flavours: BBQ Chicken; Sour Cream and Chive (tested); Totally Cheesy; Steak and Onion. Nutritional unusualness: 156 kcal, 8.9g of fat, of which saturates 1.9g (per BBQ Chicken bag).
"Ja" reports: Both flavours very nice although the BBQ Chicken flavour is just really BBQ sauce flavour. The ridges create a much crunchier bite than normal Hula Hoops.

..."Ja" got in first with these, while "Paul" also plumped for the first two flavours, adding: I found these just before I started work. The BBQ Chicken ones are quite nice with the Sour Cream not tasting as good. They are very crunchy with their unusual ridged shape. Elsewhere, "Marc Carran" felt that this link would suffice instead of a proper photo of the Walkers Cheddar Cheese Flavour he says he's consumed in Southport, pondering: Is this the answer to the closing of Golden Wonder and the goodbye to the rare XL Cheese crisps? They are OK and smell/ taste like those Bugles crisps. They are quite weak in flavour and it looks like all Walkers Crisps have weaker taste..., while "dipper" claims to have seen Cheese flavoured Snackspot readers for 15p, in Derby, chortling: Now these were a "Gem" find, nice crispy Snackspot readers in a cheddar cheese seasoning with only 11 grams of fat per reader! These really are a must for your next shop folks, just remember, you heard it hear first! I salute your(collective) sense of humour, crack open a beer!

Comment: The Walkers Cheddar Cheese flavour have been avaliable in verious places in ccentral Edinburgh for a couple of weeks now. My local Scotmid got them in yesterday, and even better they're included in a 4 for £1 offer.

I don't have a reciept picture, but here's one of my 8 packets for the next few days; http://www.bigphill.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/wccs.jpg

Comment: is it just me, or do the Steak and Onion flavour of these taste like Frazzles?

Comment: Where did you find the steak & onion flavour? I've only seen the sour cream & bbq chicken both in multipacks and normal packs.

Comment: There's two different 6 bag multipacks. One has 3 each of the Sour Cream & Chicken flavours, the other has 3 each of the Cheesy & Steak flavours. The crisps are like pasta or even celery slices to look at, but much more crunchy of course. To my mind Hula Hoops don't really suit these more poncy flavours - they should stick to the tried and tested more simple flavours. Sour Cream & Chive was my favourite though - nice strong smell when you open the bag, and 70s style lettering on the actual packet.

Comment: There are two multipacks available, I've only seen one type in my local Asda though.

I like these 'grown up' Hula Hoops!

Comment: New BBQ Chicken Hula Hoops are amazing! Almost as good as their predecessor "SHAKE2FLAVA: Yee-Haw! It's Southern Fried Chicken Flavour Hula Hoops" which had a wee bag to add the BBQ-ness to em. YUM!

Comment: What a pleasant surprise to wake up this drab monday morning to find out that the people behind hula hoops have started to listen to the common crisp eater. long have i admired the hoops appropriate size and crisp : packaging ratio making it a family favourite for crispy exciting excursions over the years saving space (see how many packs you can fit in a puma bum-bag) and at the same time keeping it's integrity. yet i always felt let down with the end product. As you can see from my name i'm a student of the Brannigans school of potato based snacks and this is simply because of the all important factor: texture. Brannigans has this in abundance as it all comes down to one thing: how does the crisp feel in your mouth? Simple. Original hula hoops did not have good texture. good potato content yes but this needs to be combined with something else. Which brings me to hula hoops new "Ridges". we still have the same down-sized packaging although slightly marked up from its predecessor. gone is the strict cylindrical body of the hoop and is replaced with a squeezed down version, a more flaky coating and showered in flavoured dust of (interestingly) only two varieties: bbq and sour cheese. a nice touch i thought. after all how tired we all are of the crisp makers taking us for a ride with silly flavours smacking of desperation. marmite anyone? The sour cheese is a delight to behold making a mockery of its rivals, notabley pringles. i'm not a massive meat fan but the bbq seems to stand up wel on it's own without being too tangy. One thing lacking with the multi pack is the lack of a ready salted option, hooray for us yes but we must still consider biddies and hyper-active kids - they're crisp eaters too. Also id like to see hula hoops think about releasing a "big eat" bag in the style of the classic monster munch of the same name, these bags are great but theres just not enough for me.

"seriously tasty" it says on the pack. don't be put off by the flashy bag, this is a serious crisp. hula hoop ridges, building bridges.

7.9/10

Goes well with: robinsons lemon juice. Best TV companion: futurama
