Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Wrigley's Airwaves Black Mint Confirmed sighting: Wrigley's Airwaves Black Mint
Posted: 18:44 Wed 19-Apr-2006. Price: 35p. Location: Chetwynd Stores, Chilwell, Nottingham. Nutritional unusualness: Sweeteners (Isomalt, Sorbitol, Mannitol, Aspartame, Acesulfame K).
"John" reports: Having seen the first mention of these on the entry about Coke with Lime, I finally spotted them at my local corner shop. I'm pretty certain these won't be replacing Airwaves Blackcurrant (as "Robbo" speculated), because they're liquorice flavour! There's no way to tell from the packaging, and I'm not sure I could even taste any mint in there, though it may be referring to the usual "menthol" Airwaves flavour, which is all present and correct. I think the flavour is quite acceptable, but I must admit I'm not the world's biggest liquorice fan!

...Not to contradict first-time (I think) spotter "John", but these do warn of their "Anise and Eucalyptus Flavours" in small print on the back. The Grocer magazine is adamant that at least Wrigley's Extra Mountain Frost is being replaced by "menthol, mint and cinnamon" Wrigley's Extra Fire, which I imagine taste like the Tic Tac Cinnamon (Limited Edition) that "Hayz" saw going for "1.09 for 4 packs", in Rickmansworth Tesco, deducing: If you like cinnamon you'll love these! They get hotter as you chew them, nice and sweet too. I hope they make them permanent :) Sounds more like repackaged Winter Warmers to me, especially as The Grocer anticipates that the new Tic Tac flavour is actually going to be Tropical Twist, due in April and "backed by a national radio campaign".

Comment: Airwaves Black Mint replace Airwaves Blackcurrant. Extra Mountain Frost is replaced by Extra Fire. Extra Mints Spearmint is replaced by Extra Mints Cool Breeze.

Comment: I had some pre-production samples of Tropical Twist. It tastes nice to start with, but the aftertaste isn't great.

Comment: Finally, Germany have had the Black Mint Airwaves for a while now. Definately going to be keeping an eye out for this one.

I never really liked Mountain Frost - It didn't seem to hold together very well, it was very soft, it fell apart in your mouth and became somewhat limp.

Extra Fire is excellent for cinnamon lovers like myself. Although I;m slightly confused as to why Wrigley's didn't simply release "Big Red" over here, as that's essentially what Extra Fire is, if not quite so intense.

Comment: i am looking forward to extra fire a lot. mountain frost gum was a bit rubbish, so it'll be good to have something else as an option instead. this airwaves black sounds like a sugar free pk gum, which can only be a good thing!

Comment: Tried the Extra Fire yesterday and it was rubbish. I don't know why it was called fire as it was not hot at all, and the flavour was rubbish too. I ate/chewed the entire pack in less than an hour as the flavour was so weak. I wish that I could have spent my money on a tried and tested flavour such as the peppermint. Rubbish.

Comment: I wish they'd make liquorice gum but without the menthol. I used to like PK gum in the blue packets, does anyone remember that? Yum yum.

Comment: i have to defend extra fire here, it's delicious! although why they thought the menthol was necessary, i am unclear. leave that to the airwaves brand, wrigleys!

Comment: I am indeed a first-time spotter, but long-time lurker! It's quite possible that I missed the flavour description as I only scanned the small print and was looking for "liquorice", I didn't think of anise!

I really can't believe they're replacing blackcurrant airwaves with these... it really sucks, I'm a massive fan of what I've come to nickname "purple crack"! Actually I'm not addicted to it (fortunately), but I do seem to get through rather a lot.

Anyway, I'm off to Tesco to buy up the rest of their boxes of blackcurrant Airwaves!! Hopefully I'll have something new to post soon...

Comment: The thing that I find annoying about the Fire is that, despite the packaging, the chicklets themselves aren't actually red.

I used to buy the blue and red packets of Airwaves and if someone asked if they could have some gum, I would produce one in each hand, like Morpheus, and offer... a choice.

"I can only show you the gum. You are the one that has to walk through it."

Comment: I have to agree with someone before:

Extra Ice is the choice of the God's. It is absolutely amazing.

Has anyone else noticed that when in the packet Extra Ice has a slight smell of Cola flavour Hubba Bubba from years ago? It's really quite amazing.

This Extra Fire sounds quite nice, though.

But I wish they'd bring back the fruit-flavoured Red Extra. :'(

Comment: Extra Moutain Frost is Extra Ice. Exactly the same. Big Red was around in the UK about 10 years ago. Didn't last long. Extra fire tastes the same but with no sugar. Anyone remember Rapsberry Fanta? Wish they could bring this back. Apple Fanta was brought back - why wasn't this. Anyone have any news??
