Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Nestle Rolo Ice Cream Roll Confirmed sighting: Nestle Rolo Ice Cream Roll
Posted: 15:25 Tue 30-May-2006. Price: Around 1.79 if I remember correctly. Location: Co-op, Silsden, West Yorkshire. Sub-flavours: Rolo, Black Forest, or Fruit Trifle. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Martin Rake" reports: After a long discussion the other week about favourite desserts of the past, namely the Walls Arctic Roll and laying down the challenge to my friend Pat Smith to find me one (he failed by the way as he could only get an own brand version), I discovered that Nestle had in fact brought out the Rolo version of this dessert!! A chocolate sponge was the outer layer, with toffee/ butterscotch flavoured ice cream in the middle! Now this is the Arctic roll for the 00's, although I do still miss Arctic roll and can't wait to try it again as Walls are supposed to be bringing it back.

..."Martin Rake" returns to make real progress on eliminating some of the older requests from the (recently updated) "Awaiting sightings" column on the right of this page, while The Grocer magazine goes more upmarket with the news that premium-priced chocolatiers Gu are following up their unremarkable Gu Brownies (3.99 for box of 8, Sainsbury) with a "lighter, fresher alternative to the conventional American-style ice creams", in the form of Double Chocolate Gelato, Chocolate and Raspberry Gelato and Bourbon and Tahitian Vanilla Gelato desserts (all around 3.99 for 500ml, from Waitrose/ Ocado and Sainsbury's).

Comment: Speaking of Gu Brownies, I just tried these and found them disappointing. They had a good, moist texture but didn't taste very chocolaty at all. The Gu puddings are much more chocolaty and nice!

Comment: yeah, I have no idea what they're playing at with the Brownies - I haven't tried the Almond torte yet, but I sincerely hope that's as chocolate-intensive as the puddings...

Comment: Just a quaint observation from yours truly

Isn't it nice how Mr Snackspot often goes out and buys the product in question, then places down on one of the surfaces around his house with the receipt carefully placed in shot next to it, and takes a snap, true professionalism not gone unnoticed ;-)

Comment: I've just finished off a Gu choc & raspberry icecream (from Ocado). Very very yummy. Comes in a posh insulated black polystyrene box. I'm not sure it's in any way lighter than a US icecream. Sort of like incredibly upmarket raspberry ripple; the raspberry streak was properly sour and fruity, and the chocolate icecream was jolly nice too.

Comment: we tried the vanilla Gu Ice Cream at the weekend, utterly disappointed. I was very excited, (being a hot choc souffle lover) but the vanilla ice cream had flavour but also had overpowering texture of fillers rather than ice CREAM. If you look at the ingredients they use a plethora of gums to bulk it and you can taste it too. Nice packaging, but not buying again.

Comment: All 3 varieties are currently available in Sheffield Tesco Express. Haven't tried them yet though. May hold out for more B&J Chocolate Therapy!
