Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Walkers BBQ Rib flavour crisps Confirmed sighting: Walkers BBQ Rib flavour crisps
Posted: 19:47 Tue 11-Jul-2006. Price: Around 40p. Location: News and Booze, Birmingham. Nutritional unusualness: "70% less saturated fat", "This bag now contains 0.5g of salt, that's 8% of your guideline daily amount (or about the same amount as a slice of bread)".
"TalkShowHost" reports: Walkers planned on releasing these originally when they relaunched the whole crisp range a while back, but I guess they held them back so that they could cash in that little bit more. According to The Grocer magazine a few weeks ago, these are supposed to be in place of the existing Barbecue flavour. Whether they are the same in all but name remains to be seen, but the bag suggests they are a new flavour altogether (anyone who has tasted ribs will certainly agree that a BBQ rib and plain old barbecue are quite different things). I guess these sound a little less vegetarian-friendly too, it's really rubbing the meat and bones thing in.

..."TalkShowHost" expands enigmatically on "Magnetic Ham Sandwich's" recent observations, while "Whatever happened to Monster Munch?", demands "Sun-Pat Pat". "I know it's been a while, but I feel it's time to bring it up again... About 10 years ago Monster Munch were famous for having the ultimate in salt and vinegary flavour which only the true Monster Muncher could handle. Why did they change this? Why?" ...though "steve dixon" claims to have located the elusive Burton's Fish 'n' Chips for 35p in "Stratstone Doncaster, Wheatley, Doncaster", roaring: I love Fish and Chips! They're the best and the BMW dealership have them in a snack machine!!

Comment: There you go, They've ignored vegetarians here, as BBQ flavour, i oft munched a packet, but as BBQ Rib flavour, i won't be munching them
Posted: 13:59 Wed 12-Jul-2006 by "TalkShowHost" # permalink comment
Comment: Exactly! A real draw for vegetarians for crisps is that they allow you to 'pretend' that you can eat meat! Walkers really let the veggies down here! They should make a Quorn flavour or something!

Comment: It's surprising how few vegetarians there are, only something like 5% of Britain, It should be way more than that i reckon

Comment: Wow, these are pretty nasty. If they're replacing the old Barbecue flavour then that's shame, they were one of my favs. As were Pickled Onion, and Worcester Sauce.

Comment: Pickled Onion had a nasty aftertaste, but the Worcester Sauce were brilliant. Has anyone ever tried making their own Worcester Sauce crisps with a bag of Ready Salted and a splash of Lee and Perrins? I suppose it could work in theory, especially since home made Salt and Vinegar has been a common fall back in our family for years (mainly because my poor old nan kept buying boring old Ready Salted by accident due to colour blindness).

Comment: I do remember once when a mate at school would put vinegar in his ready salted crisps and I couldn't stand the stench of the odour. And they were soggy when he added it. I hate salt and vinegar anyway, so I'm not in the seat to complain.

Comment: I tried the BBQ Rib flavour today and it's not at all the same a Barbecue. Much prefer the Barbecue one myself. I also saw Steak & Onion flavour on the shelved today in Woolworths. They must be a replacement of Beef & Onion. I wonder if they are different too. And by the way, Pickled Onions appears to be back on the shelves now. So for Pickled Onion lovers, you have got them back again.

Comment: The new BBQ Ribs flavour are vile. I hope these aren't replacing the original BBQ flavour as those were gorgeous (and if Pickled Onion & Worcester Sauce flavours are going too I might as well slit my wrists now!)

Seriously though avoid these crips. Have a chemical aftertaste that I usually associate with Pringles.

PS - I often sprinkle Worcester Sauce on Ready Salted crisps - it's divine!

Comment: smeg_head, you've hit the nail on the head about the chemically aftertaste of BBQ rib flavour...I couldn't quite put my finger on it but they are like certain pringles flavourings. BTW they are vile.

Comment: I didnt believe how tasty and life like they was until i tried them for myself! Theyre amazing, taste exactly like BBQ ribs from a chineese restaurant!! Congratulations to Walkers for being able to get the same amazing taste in a crisp! They are definately nothing like the original BBQ flavour and if BBQ rib r replacing BBQ then i wont b bothered cuz i hated BBQ anyway, they just tasted of smoke to me

Comment: These crisps are complete baba. There's a horrid sweet taste to them and an all-round chemical reek. The aftertaste is as bad as you might think - these are some of the worst crisps I've ever stuffed into my face

Comment: Has any one tried the steak and onion flavour? Taste amazing - just like real steak. Are these a replacement for Beef and onion? 50382 8

Comment: walkers have started to put the bbq rib flavor in multi packs, they are totally different to bbq and not half as good! BRING BACK BBQ!!! they were my favourite flavour!!!:(

Comment: Well i think they're great. Taste so much like chinese spare ribs! I must admit though i love the original BBQ flavour and hope they keep both as they are very different. They do remind me slightly of Pringles as mentioned above with the slight chemical aftertaste but still, i think they're great

Comment: Sorry to hear you poor veggies are not going to eat these crisps, that's a real shame and I'm sure Walkers are really worried about the fact all that will happen is that you will go and eat a different flavour. The BBQ Ribs are sensational, and my "go to" packet in the current Walkers range (of which all are pretty good). I don't even care that I'm starting to develop a pot belly after eating them non-stop for about 3 weeks now, it's worth it. I think. And to the person who pointed out the comment by the 'company rep' above, good spotting, and I agree with you.

Comment: never mind about this, what has happened to Walker's Smoky Bacon? I have looked in shop after shop, big and small, and not a smoke of a bacon in sight! To me, any other crisp is second division.

Comment: there's lots of smokey bacon crisps on the shelves my way,and don't worry veg heads they might taste horrible but bbq rib are vegatarian(I'm sure?), and do replace bbq.

Comment: well my way is a complete dud on the smoky bacon front. Tried M&S Ham or gammon, or something, flavour and it was way out of line.

Comment: I know you guys were worried about me but I can happily report that I have found Smoky Bacon in W6. This morning there was a whole new boxful in Tesco. By 7pm there was one bag left. This is definitely the most popular crisp flavour ever. I can report that I bought that last bag. It was like manna from heaven.

Comment: If you every come up blank on the Smokey Bacon front, you can find them in the Mighty Meaty multipacks. I'd forgotten how nice they were. Yum

Netherless, Ronnie Barker is plugging some interesting food- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1lRdTmiaug Seems that Barbecue flavour has been around much longer than we thought!

Comment: It's all change for the design of Walkers crisp bags again. The actual Walkers logo on the bags has been given a slight freshen-up. It's now rounder and the typeface has altered slightly. Also the wording for the flavour of crisps on each bag has changed from the bold golden block capitals introduced at the start of 2006 to a much softer lower case writing in black. The picture on the front has changed too, now showing a potato cut into many thin slices that gradually turn into crisps. There's writing on the back of each pack now informing us how happy Walkers are whenever it rains - that's an ill-timed comment just now of course. The front of the multipacks now even have a picture of a tractor on them ploughing a field. So altogether it's a very rustic image being promoted from Walkers now.

And it's goodbye to the Lamb & Mint flavour too - at least in the Meaty multipack. They've been replaced by 4 bags of Steak & Onion flavour instead.

Comment: They can change their logo but the crisps still suck, the switch to sunseed was a screw up.

Comment: I have found a website where i can vent my anger, i despise the bbq rib flavour, they are disgusting, the initial taste and the after taste are just bad, and when i sent the email to them saying that im gutted that they dont make them any more, i got a reply saying that they dont make them anymore. I was like thanks, i hate automated responses. So i sent them another one haha!
