Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: McCoy's Ridge Cut Jackets Confirmed sighting: McCoy's Ridge Cut Jackets
Posted: 19:51 Wed 28-Feb-2007. Price: 59p for 2. Location: Corner shop, Plymouth. Sub-flavours: Melted cheese and bacon; Chilli beef; Sour cream and chive. Nutritional unusualness: 260 calories/ 15.5g fat per 50g bag.
"Magnetic Ham Sandwich" reports: There's a new range of Real McCoy's crisps to look out for. They're called Jackets and I've spotted two flavours so far, both apparently just seasonal editions. These are crisps cut with the skins left on the edges (which is noticeable on a thick-cut crisp like a McCoy's), and made with "Jacket potato flavours". There's Sour Cream and Chive which was a little too bland for my liking, and the better Melted Cheese and Bacon which had a nice strong ham-like taste. These crisps also have the new "Same Great Taste - 30% Less Sat Fat" logo on the packs - like the previously mentioned redesigned packets for the standard Real McCoy's range - as McCoy's are now made with a blend of vegetable oil and sunflower oil in line with the more healthy snacking policy recently adopted by most other crisp companies.

...As usual, not too much to add - though according to the The Publican, the seasonal nature of these depends "on the right kind of potato crop, usually only available in a window between approximately November and early in the New Year". Oh, and Salty Dog are also emphasing their pomme-de-terre heritage with a presumably even-more-upmarket Darling Spuds range.

Comment: I've since had a third flavour of the McCoys Jackets - Beef Chilli - but only in a 6 bag multipack where the packs are only 32g so I don't know if that flavour is available singly in the larger 50g bags. It tastes just like all the previous Chilli flavours McCoys have done over the years.

Comment: In reply to Phillerena, I bought some of the new Cool Ranch flavour Real McCoys Specials Tortillas in Tesco's at the weekend. The packs have been slightly redesigned too with a new style logo.

In fact, whilst in Tescos I noticed that all flavours and pack sizes [including the new 140g bags] of Doritos have also been redesigned with a new Doritos logo. And even Tesco's own brand crisps now come in newly redesigned bags with a picture of a Sunflower on the front so you know how healthy they are. All this just a couple of months since Quavers, Square Crisps, French Fries, Monster Munch, Skips, Discos, even Marks & Spencers Hand Cooked Crisps all got newly redesgined bags proclaiming how much better for you they are than they used to be. In fact, it's got to a point where it's virtually impossible now to buy crisps that DON'T tell you that.

Comment: I had some of the new Sizzling Chilli Beef flavour Real McCoys today - in a 50g bag. I know McCoys have done flavours similar to this several times in the past, but this is easily their best yet. First there's a lovely hit of the real beef flavour on each crisp, followed by a nice warm and spicy chilli aftertaste that lingers in the mouth. Lovely !!!

Comment: The melted cheese and bacon one was nice, could've tasted more cheesey or bacony, but was overall OK.
