Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Pringles XXL Confirmed sighting: Pringles XXL
Posted: 20:14 Tue 27-Mar-2007. Price: 1.98 (special offer 2 for 2). Location: Asda, Southgate, North London. Sub-flavours: Ready Salted, Salt and Vinegar, Sour Cream and Onion, Texas BBQ Sauce.
"David C" reports: "Pringles connoisseur" David C here. Spotted these today - they are just like a normal Pringles tube, but bigger (213g instead of 170g). Nothing else to say, other than I never appreciated how small a normal Pringles tube was until today.

..."David C" backs up Magnetic Ham Sandwich's observations, though no sign as yet of the Wild Mushroom with Roasted Garlic, or Crumbly Mature Cheese "Gourmet" varieties. Also "larging it" this month are KP Big Nuts (in Char Grilled Steak, Cheddar and Onion, Hickory Smoked BBQ, or Red Hot Chilli), while "saltnshake" spontaneously took it upon themselves to update "Stuart Campbell's" Crisp Hall of Fame, explaining: Thought I'd submit a few thoughts about what I think are the best crisps on the market, with a few additional thoughts. I love crisps and believe they don't get the recognition they deserve as an indispensable feature of the British diet. Feel free to disagree with my selections or comments; let's get a debate going - just View comments for the full run-down...

Comment: Cheese and Onion: For me, Golden Wonder sets the standard when it comes to cheese and onion crisps. Consistently great flavour - you really can taste the cheese and the undertone of onion is just right, not too strong and overpowering but very definitely oniony. Fantastic. The standard by which others must be judged.

Salt and vinegar: Again, Golden Wonder is the one to beat; on its day, a packet of GW Salt n vinegar is unbeatable - loads of tangy vinegar, with just the right amount of salt to balance that face-puckering vinegar hit. But they're undoubtedly less consistent than GW Cheese and onion and its by no means unusual to come across a pack which contains a distinctly bland product. I've never been a fan of Walkers SnV and the new healthier version is awful- what have they done to them? Greasy and flavourless.

Ready Salted: I'm going to sit on the fence here. As you may by now have guessed, I'm a bit of a Golden Wonder man, but when it comes to Ready Salted, I think Walkers is giving them a run for their money. GW I feel gives a more potatoey flavour, with not too much salt, but Walkers somehow packs a more satisfying texture and crunch. My tasting notes are consistent in this, but watch this space.

Pickled Onion: There can be only one - Walkers (but does anyone remember Tudor Pickled Onion...?) Golden Wonder is a pale imitation.

Smoky Bacon: Golden Wonder just edges this one but I do enjoy a pack of Walkers (and they don't come back on you)

Roast Chicken: Golden Wonder; I can almost visualise a Sunday chicken dinner when I munch a pack of these golden hued beauties. Pass the bread sauce...

Prawn Cocktail: Walkers have done to these what they did to Salt n Vinegar- ruined them!

Beef/Steak: It has to be Walkers Steak and onion; really nice; loads of beefy flavour, with a nice peppery finish.

Comment: Couldn't agree more Marquez. I have twice asked them to produce pickled onion variety and been fobbed off. How many varieties of cheese, cheese and onion, sour cream, etc, etc do we need?

Comment: My current favourite crisps are Waitrose own Sausage (Lincolnshire or Cumberland, can't remember) and Mustard.

Won't ever buy Pringles. They are made of evil.

Comment: Oh, I wouldn't say that, Spoffoth! Well at least according to the ingredients they don't contain evil...
