Posted: 16:58 Tue 08-May-2007. Price: Multipack of 6 for 99p (ish). Location: Sainsbury's, Balham. Sub-flavours: French Onion, Texan Grill. Nutritional unusualness: 99 calories per pack.
"robertster" reports: First time I've seen a Tayto snack, perhaps it's the early signs of their assault on the mainland. Frankly, the "whisps" themselves were horrid. Far too solid, it was like eating cardboard. But the flavouring was really rather good, and on both varieties. This hopefully bodes OK for their relaunching of Golden Wonder.

...Cheers "robertster" - let's hope it's the "good flavouring" aspect which transfers to Golden Wonder, rather than the "eating cardboard". In other curiously-named crispiness: "Wow what a fantastic find, a snack with all the flavour and oomph that I love. Spicy Red Pepper Salsa is my particular favourite, with a great kick and hardly any fat!! So I can eat as many as usual but not feel so guilty. Hurray!", cheered "kate hobson" regarding the Almost Eden chips she wasn't quite enthusiastic enough to provide a photo of, while Japanese snack-seller "Josh Long" was a bit more overt regarding these Wasabi Curl Sticks, trumpeting: "We got a new wasabi snack in recently and being the wasabi fiend that I am it's not hard for me to spread the word. Of all the wasabi snacks I've tasted, this one is definitely in the top 3!"

Comment: They have had the Texan Grill flavour in Wilkinsons for at least a year, they are one of my favorite crisps, have a good meaty flavour for a low calorie crisp which makes a change as most low cal versions stick to ready salted and other boring flavours.

Comment: I had the Mature Cheddar & Red Onion flavour of the Almost Eden Chips the other week - bought in Tesco in Doncaster just before Easter. They were quite pricey for just a 100g bag, but tasted fantastic, with a nice strong cheddar and onion flavour. Being baked instead of fried gives the crisps a lovely light and crispy texture.

Comment: Boots the Chemist have been selling their own kind of similar low calorie/'wispy' textured snacks for several years now naming them Prawn Shells. These form part of their low calorie slimline snack range identical to these produced by Tayto's Whisps although are produced in just one flavour namley prawn cocktail and are very strong and tasty indeed. Maybe they are made for Boots by Golden Wonder's factory as it is well known the company make crisps for supermarket own brand crisps. Lets hope the Golden Wonder relaunch is a success as the popular crisps of yesteryear had many great flavours that I still compare world domineering Walkers to.

Comment: I'm glad these are baked in an oven rather than a bucket or something.

Comment: The 'almost eden' baked crisps are in waitrose at the moment I tried the mature cheese and red onion, they tasted like cheesy feet, horrible! Why do the manafacturers insist on making standard flavours 'posh' for? if they had just stuck to a regular cheese and onion flavour these would be nice.
