Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Walkers Crisps Chilli and Lemon Confirmed sighting: Walkers Crisps Chilli and Lemon
Posted: 21:08 Thu 26-Jul-2007. Price: 32p. Location: Corner shop, Plymouth. Sub-flavours: Cajun Spice. Nutritional unusualness: 181 calories, 11.4 g fat per 34.5 g bag.
Apologies to "Nick T", who subsequently sent this excellent photo of the product, but "Magnetic Ham Sandwich" located both spicy new varieties, reporting: It's new logo - new flavours once again from Walkers who never seem to stand still in the crisp and snack market these days. The Chilli and Lemon flavour no doubt takes its cue from the large Asian population of Walkers' hometown of Leicester, with intricate patterning along one edge of the packet - even the "New" flash in the top corner of the packet is printed in English and Hindi. Reading the back of the pack we are told these crisps are made from real chillies and lemons as Walkers "embrace food and culture from around the world". Be warned though, these are not for those with delicate mouths - the chilli flavour is hot enough to bring tears to your eyes, although the citrus kick of the real lemon is also clearly tasteable to balance out the heat a little. It's a strong new flavour Walkers have brought us here.

Walkers have also brought out new Cajun Spice flavour - in pinky coloured packets. This flavour will appeal to those who still miss the lovely Barbecue flavour Walkers discontinued last year (to replace with the controversial BBQ Rib flavour). The taste and smell is quite similar to Barbecue, but these new Cajun Spice crisps add a subtle yet pleasant spicey flavour to the mix. Another winner from Walkers.

...Speaking of Walkers, apparently they've pulled their latest Gary Lineker ad for featuring a "fun celebration of [...] the unpredictable British weather" - though, in other topical tie-ins: while the US enjoys Simpsons-themed Kwik-E-Marts and green-centred Shrek Snickers, we have to make do with Burton's (largely unidentifiable) Shrek The Third Choc Chip Biscuits.

Comment: Why the bloody hell have they changed the logo and *again*? It was only changed two years ago! A decent logo should last at least five years. And the change of packaging too - why?

It's embarrassing. It makes it look like they don't know what the hell they're doing.

Comment: The new recipe Walkers crisps are actually not too bad. The all-British crisps are seemingly cut slightly thinner than before and therefore contain less fat and more flavour. The '100% British Potatoes' billboards have gone up all over the country now - but what a shame for Walkers that their multi-million pound TV adverts saying how much they like it when it rains coincided with mass floodings in England and have had to be postponed.

In terms of disasterous or ill-advised ad campaigns that's got to be right up there with the famous Chevrolet Nova campaign in Mexico when they failed to realise 'No Va' in Spanish means 'Doesn't Go' and hardly sold any cars. And of course in more recent times there was OJ Simpsons book 'If I Did It' in which he explained in great detail how he would have murdered his wife if he had of done it which of course he always said before he didn't.

Comment: not to nitpick :) but that Chevvy Nova story is a huge urban myth (see below) - not that advertisers don't make hideous and appalling errors of judgement, it's just that this wasn't one of them..!

Claim: The Chevrolet Nova sold poorly in Spanish-speaking countries because its name translates as "doesn't go" in Spanish.

Status: False.

First of all, the phrase "no va" (literally "doesn't go") and the word "nova" are distinct entities with different pronunciations in Spanish: the former is two words and is pronounced with the accent on the second word; the latter is one word with the accent on the first syllable. Assuming that Spanish speakers would naturally see the word "nova" as equivalent to the phrase "no va" and think "Hey, this car doesn't go!" is akin to assuming that English speakers woud spurn a dinette set sold under the name Notable because nobody wants a dinette set that doesn't include a table.

The truth is that the Chevrolet Nova's name didn't significantly affect its sales: it sold well in both its primary Spanish-language markets, Mexico and Venezuela. (Its Venezuelan sales figures actually surpassed GM's expectations.)
