Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Pringles Gourmet Wild Mushroom with Roasted Garlic and Parsley Confirmed sighting: Pringles Gourmet Wild Mushroom with Roasted Garlic and Parsley
Posted: 17:05 Tue 21-Aug-2007. Price: 1.49. Location: Co-op, Plymouth. Sub-flavours: Crumbling Mature Cheese and Spring Onion. Nutritional unusualness: 685 calories, 38g fat per 120g tube.
"Magnetic Ham Sandwich" reports: Mushroom is one of those flavours that for some reason only rarely appears as a crisp flavour. The last time I can recall was the short-lived Chicken and Mushroom flavour Wheat Crunchies that were out a few years ago. Since then there's only been a brief appearance by a Tesco's own-brand effort, but rejoice now if you like the taste of those little fungis because newly added to this range is Wild Mushroom with Garlic and Parsley. The garlic hits you first, but after a couple of seconds there's plenty of mushroom taste to enjoy. The parsley is present as little green flecks on each crisp. I can see this distinctive flavour being around for a quite a while. Also newly released by Pringles is the Gourmet Crumbling Mature Cheddar and Spring Onion flavour - but they're not much to get excited about. They just taste like stale cheese that's maybe been left out all night or something.

..."Magnetic Ham Sandwich" completes the set of current Gourmet varieties here, while "Mike Savage" was sufficiently surprised by these Honey BBQ Doritos Bits Twisties to remark: I received a pack of these on a KLM flight between Amsterdam and Leeds/ Bradford. I like Doritos but these seem wrong, like you're smoking a deep fried cigarette or using lard instead of margarine on your toast. They carry quite a wiff too as they're heavily seasoned/ salted. They taste okay but it's like eating the crumbs or broken chips when coming to the end of a bag of Doritos. They stick in your throat too!

Comment: Didn't Sensations briefly do a mushroomy flavour last Christmas? Nice but not hugely mushroomy, though, so not the most memorable crisps!

Comment: Mention of Wheat Crunchies in my spot above reminds me that there's a new flavour to look out for now. It's Spicy Pepperoni flavour and they come in in bright green bags. I had some at the weekend and they were quite nice, but disappointingly not particularly spicy.

And there's obviously been something of a major re-think down at Mr Pringle's factory recently as the Gourmet Pringles range have been promoted to full-size 160g tubes now - with a new purple and silver logo. They're on BOGOF at most supermarkets right now, but it seems at this early stage that not every gourmet flavour has made it through the transition.

If you recall the gourmet range began life last year in the lunch-box sized 45g mini tubes. Then they grew into two-thirds sized 120g tubes, and now you get 160g of gourmet snacking for your money. At this rate of growth by 2010 the tubes will be taller than the Post Office Tower. They've slightly changed the recipe too - there's now more calories, more fat and more carbohydrates in each 100g. Presumeably customer research had found the flavours were not quite 'gourmet' enough so they've been beefed up a little.

Comment: I'm on the look-out for Halloween themed Pringles again, after the 5 they did last year. So far though all I've seen is Sour Scream & Onion flavour, with pumpkins and spiders on the tube. There's Fiery Hot Hero around now which also has spiders webs on the packaging, but thats a promotion for the Spiderman 3 movie.

Comment: Two more Halloween flavours were tracked down at Co-op this morning - Ooooriginal flavour and Salt & Vampire flavour. Both have the same pumpkins and spiders designs as the Sour Scream & Onion flavour already reported.

Comment: I've only seen 4 flavours in the new full-size tubes Gourmet range from Pringles so far. There's nothing especially different in the flavours either so I'm not sure where Pringles are going with this one. The 'gourmet' flavours I've had are Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar, Crumbling Mature Cheese & Spring Onion, Thai Sweet Chilli & Lemongrass, and Flame Grilled Steak & Caramelized Onion [the best of the four]. There's no sign yet of the Sea Salt & Black Pepper, the controversial Tiger Prawn & Garlic, or the only recently launched Wild Mushroom & Garlic flavours making the move up from the two-thirds sized Gourmet tubes into these new full sized Gourmet tubes. The shop shelves are all full now with the Merry Pringles Christmas tree branded tubes.

Comment: Well i believe that i saw many varieties of mushroom flavoured crisps while on my honeymoon in scotland however i never actually bought any. I thought mushroom and cream cheese sounded a little odd. Taraahh for now.
