Posted: 20:37 Mon 08-Oct-2007. Price: 1.59/ 150 g (BOGOF). Location: Sainsbury's, Cameron Toll, Edinburgh (shelf-edge label claims exclusive to Sainsbury's). Sub-flavours: Mediterranean Herb; Sour Cream and Chive.
"David" reports: Two flavours of Walkers Baked crisps that I hadn't seen before, available only in 150g "guzzle-bags" rather than a 6 x 25 g multipack. Low-fat or not, that's not a good way to encourage portion control! The Mediterranean Herb flavour was certainly herby, giving a quite pleasant taste vaguely like roast chicken flavour, but less chickeny (if that makes sense). Rather too heavy on the flavour dosage with each crisp substantially covered in a tad too much of the light brown powder. Would probably buy again in single-serving size if the flavouring quantity was reduced.

The Sour Cream and Chive flavour had a more normal amount of flavour powder and tasted, well, just like you'd expect sour cream and chive to ...which means, it seems like a good idea at the time, but the 'tang' of the sour cream becomes mildly unpleasant quite quickly. "Sour cream and..." may be supposed to be the 'grown-up' version of "cheese and onion" but cheese and onion is the true classic for a reason!

...An impressively detailed sighting from what I think may be a first-time spotter - while, in other "herbal" remedies, there's only one day left to try and detect the Sour Cream and Chive sauce in McDonald's Chicago Works burger, part of a weekly-rotating "Taste Of America" range which always reminds me of the old Harry Hill joke: "I once went to an Indian restaurant called 'A Taste of the Raj' - the waiter hit me with a stick and made me build a complicated railway system."

Comment: I like the way the "Taste of..." range just has two alternative buns, cheeses and toppings and just rotates them for each region in what seems a completely arbitrary manner with no relation to the place they are meant to represent. Doesn't stop me buying it of course, I'm a sucker for a special edition.

However, the current special hot Whopper at BK is far far nicer.

Comment: I'm a great fan of these Mediterranean Herb flavours, because they're all based on the original and best: Lay's (aka Walkers) Oregano Crisps, only available in Greece. Mmmmm...

Comment: Bobz - your note maketh no sense.

Regarding these new offings from Walkers - they're OK I guess but nothing special. Sunbites, though, I think have much more staying power in the market!
