Confirmed sighting: Fruit-tella Crunchies
Posted: 19:50 Tue 11-Dec-2007. Price: 30p for six lozenges. Location: Chapel Walk newsagents, Sheffield. Nutritional unusualness: Colours contain "copper complexes of chlorophyllins".
"charl" reports: Crunchy and chewy together! Not a new concept - here comes gangly Fruit-tella from the year above to muscle in on the part of the playground previously inherited by quiet and nerdy unsung favourite Tooty Frooties.
The flavours are listed as cherry, strawberry, apple, orange, lemon and flavour-of-the-year pomegranate. It's a shame no-one told the packaging designer, as they assumed that the second pink sweet would be raspberry. Each sweet is in strict order of the packaging stripes; this is an organised Euro-sweet.
With each piece roughly the size of a piece of bubblegum, there's a need to keep checking the packaging to make sure that these are in fact sweets and not gum. Quick! One more check before you swallow... They're okay! But a bit unnecessary. And the pomegranate one doesn't taste like pomegranate (probably thankfully because of its tartness).
...Another jaw-exercising update from our regular Fruit-tella correspondent - I don't know if "charl" will be quite as excited to hear that Werther's Originals are following up their Chocolate Caramels with a "delicious" new Sugar Free variant of "Britain's number one hard-boiled sweet" (95p/ 90g), while I can additionally advise that the Juice Burst version of Sugar Free Mentos Chewing Gum (£1.85/ 25 pieces, Camden Morrisons, in Raspberry Kiwi, Orange Lemon or Red Fruit Lime) tastes just like how the constantly carpet-freshened home of a friend of mine used to smell during most of the late 1970s.
