Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Ben and Jerry's Baked Alaska Confirmed sighting: Ben and Jerry's Baked Alaska
Posted: 17:18 Fri 14-Mar-2008. Price: 2.66 (on offer). Location: Sainsbury's, Southampton. Nutritional unusualness: Seemingly not B+J Fair Trade vanilla.
"choccieman" reports: B+J's leak another new product onto the market with barely a word. Apparently there are adverts out for their new sorbets, but I haven't seen anything about this. With the tag "If it's melted it's ruined", B+J's are sending a bit of a climate message with this tub, containing vanilla ice cream, marshmallow swirls and white chocolate polar bears. It's worth noting that the vanilla doesn't appear to be fair trade (like their regular vanilla) but the dairy is 'free range' according to the tub.

The description sounds nice enough, and a bit more interesting than Vanilla Toffee Crunch, but the flavour (much like toffee crunch) is just their (admittedly very nice) vanilla ice cream with some bits in (the aforementioned chocolate bears). For some reason the marshmallow swirl seems almost completely absent, which is a shame. Definitely worth a try if you're not familiar with B+J's vanilla, but perhaps not worth it if you're expecting something like their chocolate or caramel based tubs.

...In other upmarket tubs: Carte D'Or have launched three kinds of sorbet (and a Chocolate Inspiration); Raspberries and Meringue is the new Limited Edition from Haagen-Dazs; and Movenpick of Switzerland is coming to Tesco. And thank goodness it's just the chocolate-making rather than the human sacrifices that have helped "inspire" Walls' Magnum Mayan Mystica (2 packs for 2.80 in Somerfield, Larkhall), described by "Zeddy" as "Another of the Magnum range. This time milk chocolate covering chocolate ice cream with nutmeg, cinnamon and honey. You can taste the nutmeg and cinnamon in the ice cream. Unfortunately for me chocolate ice cream isn't my favourite so I wasn't a huge fan of these. Still it's a worthy addition to the range."

Comment: I tried the Lemon Carte D'Or sorbet and I must say that it was very nice indeed. It tasted of real lemons rather than artificial flavoring for a change.

Comment: At last a Ben & Jerry's that I'm hoping I'll like. I'm not a fan of brown chocolate and have been disappointed on the whole with the quality of their ice cream in the past - I'm hoping this will be a winner but I don't think you can beat Haagen Dazs....

Comment: I love the new baked alaska, i personally don't find it as sickly as some of their other flavours and I'm a big fan of both vanilla and white chocolate so this is perfect to me! Plus raising awareness about climate change is important to me, so I'm even more for it!!

Comment: We were in Amsterdam this summer, and my daughter had this Baked Alaska. She just loved it. Had to have it every day, and we have been searching for it since we have been back in the states.
