Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Vimto Fizzy Rip Roll Confirmed sighting: Vimto Fizzy Rip Roll
Posted: 18:38 Thu 05-Jun-2008. Price: 30p or thereabouts. Location: Twickenham. Nutritional unusualness: "Fizzy Coated Vimto Flavour Candy Belt".
"alleycat" reports: Candy Belt! Candy Belt! This Fizzy Rip Roll states on the packaging that it is "1 Meter of Fun!" I'm not sure that anyone should quantify fun in terms of distance, but that didnt stop the people at Vimto HQ trying! It's a standard fizzy, chewy, sugar coated confectionary strip (very similiar to Haribo's Pasta Basta), however slightly less sour and less intensely sweet. While the flavour is indeed Vimto-y, the overall experience may fail to satisfy the seasoned savourer of sour sweets. Vimto fanatics should enjoy. PS- Spilling the Vimto drink in the attached picture was an accident :(

...Great to hear from you again, "alleycat" - do you think these are the Vimto version of the metre-long (raspberry?) strips offered by some cinema pick-'n'-mix selections? Anyway, in other variously-fizzy fruitiness: Jelly Belly appear to have genuinely produced a range of Sport Beans ("formulated with carbohydrates, electrolytes, and vitamins B and C"), though no word on whether they taste as outlandish as the "vomit" and "booger"-flavoured BeanBoozled collection I saw in London Selfridges the other week. Cherry Tic-Tacs are coming to the UK, claimed a recent issue of The Grocer magazine, while Haribo have apparently "responded to a consumer campaign" to make "Tangfastics Sour Cherries [...] available as a separate bag line".

And finally, there's another opportunity to View comments to enjoy "Stephen Craig's" extensive second opinion on Lucozade Alert Lemon Zing/ Mental Edge (79p, Co-Op, Glasgow), which begins: "Clearly realising that someone else has set up a pitch in the corner of their 'claims some spurious personal benefit which is generally entirely fictitious but difficult to prove one way or the other' utility drinks field, the boys at GlaxoSmithkline have started grimly punching their hands into their fists whilst giving the skunk-eye to the unsatisfying Volvic Revive and other competitors, with this latest addition to the Lucozade range..."

Comment: Coming in a smaller than normal bottle compared to well, anything other than Panda Pops really, Lucozade Alert claims to provide a "Mental Edge" by virtue of having Guarana, Ginseng and Caffiene in it. Which, frankly, is rot. But that's pretty much a given with this type of thing.

That being said, despite providing a taste that's one part tepid Slimline tonic water, one part Pocari Sweat and one part slightly stagnant diluted lemon drink - it's, er, difficult to decide whether I like it or hate it. Even the traditionally undrinkable sweeteners seem to be baffled into submission by the curious mix of very faint tastes. It's not something I can ever see myself drinking again, really (not only due to the odd taste - but also due to the stingy portion and fizziness that doesn't really seem to fit the whole "sports drink" thing), but as a one-off drink for holding the bottle at arm's length and going "Eh?" with a look a slight distaste on your face, it can't come recommended enough.

Comment: Frankly, I'm worried.... Spotted huge numbers of ex-healhy, over weight, depressed, broke people buying and ingesting all manner of brightly packaged gloop, sugar water,'fat-free'packeted,boxed,man-made junk.....instead of FOOD!!!! maybe it was all a bad dream and the public aren't REALLY that stupid, surely? ...But this was HAPPENING EVERYWHERE! Then the hospitals were over-burdened with diabetics, cancer patients, heart disease, arthritics,etc...

Comment: does anyone know whether these are 100g, cause if they are then they're terribly unhealthy as they have 387 calories per 100g :|

Comment: you could buy the vimto rip rolls and the raspberry rip rolls in a late shop in sanderstead (greater london) but sadly they have runout of the vimto ones which i absolutely love, both cost 40p but i dont think thats unreasonable am also right now drinking the lucozade alert lemon zing and i find its much nicer than most energy drinks and actually has a slight taste of lemon rather than most energy drinks which claim to be "fruit flavoured" but no one can determine which fruits taste like this imensely sweet yellow liquid also of interest (at least was to me) the little shop near denmark hill station, next to the laundrette and restaurante sells strawberry tube with the white filling for 10p but they are heart shaped! :)
