Confirmed sighting: Walkers Chicken Tikka crisps
Posted: 22:07 Thu 14-Aug-2008. Price: £1.15 for a six pack, or two six packs for £1.85. Location: Tesco, Rugby.
"Nick T" reports: Another addition to Walkers' Do Us A Flavour range, Chicken Tikka nestles up to Gary's Special Lamb Curry on the shelf like an Indian restaurant's requisite drunk with his head on the table does to the faded plastic table posy.
Despite being suggested by readers of The Sun, the Chicken Tikka packet is more restrained than you'd imagine, without a football shirt, shaved head or white van in sight. This restraint continues on the taste front too. Whereas Gary's Special Lamb Curry screams cheap lurid curry powder, albeit with an uncharacteristic-for-Walkers real frisson of spice at the end, Chicken Tikka is gentler on the palate, displaying more richness - perhaps trying to emulate the obligatory curry house tikka butter slick? - and a pleasingly complex flavour. Both variants are winners at this special deal price, and happily come without curry's embarrassing next-day afterburn. Well, so far anyway.
...A pleasingly poetic sighting here from "Nick T", though connoisseurs must also contend with the imminent arrival of Pringles Select (around £1.48/150g, in Italian Cheese with a Hint of Garlic, Thai Sweet Chilli, Sea Salt and Balsamic Vinegar, Sundried Tomato with Basil and Paprika, or Spicy Szechuan BBQ). Elsewhere, "Zeddy" seemed underwhelmed by KP's Tortilla Hula Hoops (£1.29 BOGOF, Tesco), drawling: "Just tried out these today. The cheese ones are helluva salty. The spicy salsa have a BBQ flavour and aren't that spicy. Wouldn't go out my way to get more." And in other chicken combos, "merlinormartin" remained unimpressed by Unilver's Wot? Not In A Pot Noodle (39p, Tesco Extra, Yeovil, in Chicken and Mushroom or Beef and Tomato), dismissing them as: "Dried noodles with a sachet of flavoured sauce mix. They taste very similar to 'normal Pot Noodles' minus the soya and dried vegetable pieces."
