International sighting: Haagen Dazs Peppermint Bark
Posted: 14:53 Wed 24-Dec-2008. Price: $3.50 a pint. Location: Safeway, Shoreline, WA, USA. "Graham" reports: This is about my fifth or sixth tub of this stuff, I ate all the others before remembering to take a photo. I only had peppermint bark for the first time the other week and wasn't too keen, but when you put it in white chocolate ice cream and combine it with peppermint candy pieces it's about as near to mint ice cream perfection as you can get.
...And international greetings to you, "Graham" - now I'm wondering whether that guy who does those scary Bodyworlds exhibitions should do something similar for ice-cream under the new name of Dr Gunther von Haagen Dazs. Personally I've been dissecting plenty of Lyle's Golden Syrup Sponge Ice Cream (currently only £2/litre in Tesco, compared to £1.95/500ml for Ben and Jerry's in Sainsbury, including the new-ish Jamaican Me Crazy and Mango Berry Swirl), mostly to pass the time until the arrival of Unilever's coffee-flavoured drink/ice cream hybrid, Cafe Zero (though I'm unclear if this'll improve on the Original Chino-style machines seen in the Cinnabon shops popping up all over central London).
Continuing the caffeinated theme, those of you old enough to buy what Tesco very nearly calls Gifts for
Alcoholics may have already sampled Baileys with a Hint of Coffee as trialled in Asda in the run-up to Christmas, while St Helier are adding a Peach Pear cider to the startling range of fruit flavours already on sale, though I think they'll have their work cut out against the likes of Aspall Perronelle's Blush with a dash of Blackberry Liqueur. And finally, it sounds like drinkers of all ages will be able to enjoy the Juice Brewery's
Hoppers soft brew, a non-alcoholic adult drink which "mixes beer ingredients, such as hops and malt, with fruit flavours, [such as] apple, citrus and blackcurrant". Cheers!
