Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Phileas Fogg Poppadoms Indian Red Chilli Confirmed sighting: Phileas Fogg Poppadoms Indian Red Chilli
Posted: 17:05 Sat 28-Feb-2009. Price: 1/ 70g bag. Location: Tesco. Nutritional unusualness: Sour Cream And Mild Mexican Chilli, or Salsa And Mexican Chilli tortillas; Mexican Sweet Chilli, Sea Salt And Indonesian Black Peppercorn, or Irish Cheddar And Onion Chutney crisps.
Snackspot reports: Apparently Phileas Fogg snacks were "never fully de-listed, but were not widely available and have not been actively supported by United Biscuits for a number of years" - I never really "got" what they were trying to do with the brand (a tie-in with an ancient Jules Verne book?), but it's taken me almost 80 days to get through this "world" of new varieties (clever wording, I know, cheers).

I agree with this reassuringly similar-minded blog that the Poppadoms have an authentically deep-fried taste, plus a "gentle burn" from the chilli, but for me the real finds are the most natural-tasting tortilla chips I've ever had from a shop, the Sour Cream ones being intriguingly mildly cheesy. The various crisp flavours don't bring much to an already crowded market, but are worth a try for a pound a bag - though I paid about 1.59 for mine, instead of sensibly waiting for Tesco to "move onto sale prices later on in the promotion".

...For the same reason, I'll see what happens with the price before splashing out on Walkers' Buffalo Mozzarella, Southern Style Barbecue or Oriental Red Curry Sensations - though they've taken the Walkers name off another new range they're launching: the Red Sky brand believed to be "targeting upmarket rivals such as Kettle Chips and Burts" (in Sour Cream And Green Herbs, West Country Bacon And Cream Cheese, Anglesey Sea Salt, or Roasted Red Peppers And Lime).

Comment: Have you read the article linked in "move onto sale prices later on in the promotion"? Notice it's written by a certain Cory Doctorow? Any relation perhaps to EL Doctorow perhaps? The same EL Doctorow who wrote Billy Bathgate, a story about a boy who gets involved with American gangsters who are ruthless in their attempts to drive out their rivals in booze running? And later on this review talks about Walkers taking on the upmarket brands, having already effectively killed off Golden Wonder, Tudor et al? Could this be the same Walkers which is owned by PepsiCo, an American company who are ruthless in their attempts to... (continued page 94)

Comment: Just brought a bag of the PF 'Mexican Sweet Chilli crisps' (again £1 from Tesco Express). As you'd expect, probably comparable with sensations although not as greasy as walkers, very pleasant flavour, although I'm not getting the urge to eat the whole bag in one sitting as I tend to with a bag of Chilli Sensations.

Comment: I am in love with Red Sky Bacon and cream cheese! The Phileas Fogg sweet chilli are spicy enough to make them zingy without blowing your head off. But I like the McCoy's chilli tortillas better.

Comment: We loved the PF Pastrami Bagel Chips too !! Does anyone know if they are still available ? If you loved 'em too, we have found a good alternative...."Waitrose Pastrami Bagel Chips"....about £1.30 a bag....not as strong flavour as PF but very close.

Comment: They're not exactly the same, but try your local Julian Graves (how DOES that place keep going?) They sell garlic and herb grissini snacks which aren't far off.

Comment: I have been hunting up & down for mignon mrceaux to no avail, particularly when i saw phileas fogg once more stockpiling supermarket shelves.. but i have little interest in their new products that pretty much sell what other vendors have. the garlic snack bites however are a classic & to die for. i really hope they'll sell them, have been tempted to write to UB in person asking if they would be able to supply any!
