Posted: 22:11 Sun 05-Jul-2009. Price: 89p. Location: Sainsbury's, Basingstoke. Sub-flavours: Electro Tingling Spearmint (tested); Cobalt Cooling Peppermint; Pulse Crisp Tropical.
"Ian" reports: Re-branded Orbit. Fancy packaging - lots of black and greens. Looks like a pack of prophylactics. 12 sticks (obviously, for a gum called 5). Maybe it counts towards one of my 5-a-day? Nice that they've gone back to the old-fashioned stick of gum.

..."Ian" identifies most of the main mysteries here (especially as it's now available in 7 flavours in the US) - though I think it's a bit weird discovering Juicy Fruit-style foil-wrapped strips inside this futuristic box, like finding an iPod in one of the pyramids. Elsewhere, Perfetti are launching "Mentos Cube gum" (in peppermint, spearmint and berry), plus the Chupa Chups "Magics range of fizzy powder-filled lollipops". Though, going from these European Extra Cool Green Apple/ Wildberry Frost 5-packs that I recently found in a Bloomsbury newsagent, Wrigley's still can't make up their mind whether "Extras" is the name of the flatter gum-strips or the proper pillow-shaped pellets - which, bafflingly, appear to be called Orbit in Spain, the melon flavour being the most realistically flavoured of this colourful selection which "lovemaus" located in the Canary Isles.

Comment: Tried these, won't bother again. They have taste for all of 2 seconds then turn into mush.

Comment: got some Cinnamon ones off one of my fave sites http://www.everythingcinnamon.co.uk. They are quite interesting, red foil is attractive for a start and the gum leaves a hot tingly feeling in the mouth.

Comment: I had the Electro spearmint from Morrisons Northampton - I like the gum, it kept its flavour all the way - and actually burnt my tongue a bit at the start.... this is probably the best gum on the market in the uk. I tried the Mentos gum and it was awful - and became stodgy and flavourless within a minute
