Click pic to view comments - Confirmed sighting: Walls Magnum Gold?! Confirmed sighting: Walls Magnum Gold?!
Posted: 11:15 Sun 14-Mar-2010. Price: 2.49 (pack of 3). Location: Scotmid, Strathaven, Scotland.
Zeddy reports: A new Magnum for the masses (I hope the dark choc one hasn't been stopped). It has a golden toffee exterior that has a hint of Caramac about it followed by the usual creamy vanilla inside. A tasty choc ice, to be sure but cannot beat the dark Wispa-type variety I tried abroad a few years back. Whatever happened to that one, Unilever?

...You know, I was thinking of doing a special Mother's Day roundup, but was a bit weirded out by some of the limited editions being minor reworks (if that) of Valentine's Day products from Feb. Fortunately, Zeddy found another crock of gold ahead of St Patrick's Day this week in the form of Nestle Gold Le Bonbon Mousse Lait (Euro 3.50, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, also available in Noir), divining: "On my holidays I found these chocolates. They came in a classy-looking little box with tasteful gold lettering. (Ideal to pass off as a thoughtful present.) Basically they are little 'pods' of chocolate with a mousse filling. The milk ones were nice in my opinion (not the other half's though) with a flavour that Nestle haven't deigned to give the UK. They are made in Barcelona according to the packaging. The weather was good too."

Anyway, back with ice cream: these Cadbury Creme Egg Twisted Cones (99p/4, Tesco) appear to be happily co-existing with 2006's enduring Cadbury Creme Egg sticks; Nestle are staying in the game with Aero Double Bubble (2.39/3), Aero Bubbleball (1.99/4), and a Caramac ice cream bar; Fairly Nuts ("a caramel ice cream with a caramel swirl and praline almond clusters") is this spring's new flavour from Ben and Jerry's; and Walls also have a premium Cornetto Enigma range ("soft Madagascan vanilla ice cream with a core of rich sauce and inclusions") which isn't quite as inviting as the Almond Praline, Black Forest Flirt, Butter Scotch and Strawberry Tease Cake that their Indian customers can currently enjoy.

Comment: I haven't tried these choc-ices at all, but when I went to Spain once, they had Strawberry Magnum, which was so nice. Why can't they release a flavour like that over here? I'm sure that they'd do well here.

Comment: Well, I just had a Magnum Gold?!. It was a Magnum, it was gold coloured, and it left me thinking ?! Ice cream tasted of nothing, not vanilla, not cream. Chocolate tasted of nothing and left that fatty oily mouth feel. Not impressed.

Comment: I purchsed these in Asda north manchester (box 3 for £1.50 on special) and was drawn to it as i love caramel but i was not impressed at all. the outa shell lacked any real taste and is certainly not to the same texture or standard of crunch or thickness of the chocolate versions. almost comparable to a smartie shell in crispness but no flavour of caramel. inside faint lines yellow colour ran through a vanilla ice cream interior but again no real burst of caramel.

so to summarise its a vanilla ice cream bar with gold painted crispy outa shell. weird and a bit dull considering the packaging .

i bought six chunky similar looking and tasting ice cream bars in Lidl - chocolate with almonds flavour -their own version of the magnum brand - a few weeks ago (box of 6 £1.99) and they were far superior and better value.

Comment: Magnum Gold is amazing, it reminded me of my childhood. Full marks to Unilever, the ad is also very good. Bring back the 7 Deadly Sins, they were amazing too! Did you know that you can win a Somy Vaio Gold laptop online? Bring it on!

Comment: Just had my first... and last... Magnum Gold. The 'crackling' gold shell was stodgy and a little greasy, the chocolate was tasteless and possibly a little thinner than usual Magnum chocolate coating, the caramel swirl was sadly absent and the ice cream had a strangely sour, 'off' taste... very disappointed Magnum, not a winner for me!

Comment: Was so looking forward to trying this one, took weeks to track it down, took it home, waited til i was alone..fantasy turned to disappointment...what my imagination had cunjured up and the reality differed..Was expecting delicious dreamy caramac with slight vanilla caramel undertones, they captured the colour but not the taste..shame on you!

Comment: I was the same as Roseann, had been waiting for ages, tracked it down and was sorely disappointed. I was impressed by the supercool gold colour, but it also left me thinking, what am I actually eating!

Comment: I actually love it! the appearance of the gold + glitter is a little scary, but the caramel taste is awesome.
